The excitement of important days has taken over the region. After nine weeks of intense competition and sociocultural activities, the second edition of the Nungbama Cup concluded on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The team from the village of Sokorogo emerged victorious in this thrilling final, wrapping up a major event that brought together nearly 10,000 spectators from across the area.
A month of competition serving social cohesion
Organized by Société des Mines de Lafigué, a subsidiary of the Endeavour Mining group, the tournament brought together this year ten neighboring villages with a shared goal: using sports to foster social cohesion. From June 14 to August 16, the teams from Lafigué, Sokorogo, Fenessiguedougou, Tolédougou, Lépolossedougou, Kaniénémé, Ouandrama, Tissèlè-Noumousso, Triguédougou, and Boniérédougou faced off in a spirit of fraternity. Sokorogo ultimately claimed the top spot in the rankings, followed on the podium by Triguédougou and Lafigué, while the team from Tissèlè-Noumousso received the fair play award.
Beyond soccer, the event embraced a truly intergenerational dimension. A sociocultural week enriched the gathering by involving youth, elders, and women around local traditions. The village of Lafigué stood out by winning the cooking contest, while Fenessiguedougou achieved a remarkable sweep by winning the competitions in awalé, draughts, and public speaking in the Djimini language.
A regional-scale positioning
This initiative is part of the broader sports movement promoted by Endeavour Mining at the regional level. A little earlier, the group had already organized the CEO Cup, a tournament bringing together employees from its various West African sites to strengthen professional bonds of fraternity. In this internal competition, Senegal won the women’s title in its very first appearance, while Burkina Faso retained its title in the men’s competition.
This popular event also serves as a major tool for territorial dialogue for Société des Mines de Lafigué. The event enables the mining company’s teams to strengthen ties with residents and to extend its commitments in the field. The company indeed deploys programs focused on training and professional integration, such as the “Employability and Entrepreneurship” segment which has already benefited more than 1,500 people through literacy programs and enabled 65 trained youths to find work at the mine or with its subcontractors. The “N’goto Yetehe” initiative further supports those building the site.
As N’Faly Kanté, General Director of the Lafigué mine, emphasized, the word Nungbama means “unity” in Djimini. It alone sums up the tournament’s ambition: to unite the host communities in order to build a lasting and trustworthy partnership across the entire region.
