Football: Three stadiums in five months, Angola advances to organizing an AFCON

Angola is advancing at giant pace. The Angolan government inaugurated a brand new stadium last week: the Daniel Cassoma Lutucuta stadium, located in Huambo. This versatile infrastructure of 10,000 seats, built by the Mitrelli group, complies with international standards.

This delivery marks the end of a five-month cycle during which three internationally certified enclosures were completed, after those of Uíge and Bengo. This programme is part of a national strategy aimed at providing the country with infrastructures capable of hosting regional tournaments and meeting the growing requirements of the African Football Confederation.

The multipurpose complex in Huambo includes an international-sized field, an athletics track, facilities dedicated to athletes and referees, anti-doping infrastructure as well as broadcast-ready media areas, compliant with the UEFA category IV standards.

This rapid deployment is part of Angola’s broader strategy to match CAF’s growing infrastructure requirements for competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations, while strengthening its role in the rapidly growing African sports economy.

Tribute to a historical figure of Angolan football
The event was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcaractérao Pinto de Andrade, the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, and the governor of the province of Huambo, Pereira Alfredo. For the authorities, the multiplication of these sports centers aims to support the development of high-level sport and strengthen the country’s sports economy.

“It’s not just a stadium. It’s an affirmation of Angola’s capacity. This is proof that our country has the technical expertise, strategic vision and ambition to build world-class infrastructure,"

said the Minister of Youth and Sports at the inauguration.
The stadium is named after Daniel Cassoma Lutucuta, a historical figure of Angolan football, thus honouring his career and his contribution to national sport. With these three new facilities, Angola now positions itself as a potential candidate for the organization of major continental competitions, such as the African Cup of Nations.
