WAFCON 2026: Uncertainty looms again

For both men and women, the situation is the same: the African football calendar is increasingly becoming a puzzle when it comes to organizing competitions. According to our information, the general secretariat of the African Football Confederation officially informed the members of the Executive Committee of the impossibility of maintaining the Women’s AFCON next March.

A decision that comes after several weeks already, Morocco was supposed to host the competition whose deadline was to be given on March 17, has indicated to the CAF its willingness to postpone the tournament. Faced with this situation, CAF surveyed several countries, South Africa showing itself open, before backtracking.

In the wake of this internal decision, the governing body of African football has started to notify the various national federations concerned. This report confirms the doubts raised recently by the progress of preparations and the density of the international calendar, notably with an international tournament that will be held in Casablanca and Rabat during the men’s international break.

Qualifications for the World Cup compromised
There is now a question: when will the Women’s AFCON take place? For now, no new windows have been officially communicated. This new delay occurs when several selections have already started their preparation training and will need to review their plans.

The other problem that arises is related to the Women’s World Cup planned for next year in Brazil. This edition of the WAFCON was supposed to serve as a qualification in order to determine the nations that will represent the African continent. This postponement therefore sows doubt about the format of the qualifications.

CAF must now formalize this report, clarify the situation and, potentially, propose a new slot that would allow Morocco to host this women’s football festival in the best possible conditions.
