Retro AFCON - June 4, 1989: Mali won its first senior cup

On June 4, 1989, the people of Mali were jubilant as the Eagles won their first sub-regional cup. It was the Cabral Cup. It was against the Sily National of Guinea-Conakry.

As children, we didn't experience the 1972 Yaoundé African Cup of Nations. As time went by, it became clear that Mali had a homogeneous team with great players. Until proven otherwise, it remains a very good national team.

Since 1972, Mali has never played in a AFCON final. This page in the history of Malian soccer is revisited to exploit the breach opened up by the 1989 version of the Eagles' triumph. This year, too, was up to the task, with only three professionals: Gaoussou Samaké, Abdoulaye Kaloga and Amadou Pathé dit Vieux Diallo.

The main prize at stake: the trophy!

After a goalless draw in Bamako, the Eagles of Mali eliminated Morocco on April 23, 1989 in Casablanca, and awaited the Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire for the final round of the 1990 AFCON qualifiers. In the meantime, the Amlca Cabral tournament was organized in Bamako.

Mali played in Group A alongside Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. In their first two matches, they recorded two draws, while Guinea-Bissau and Senegal picked up three points each. This put the Eagles in a turbulent zone for their third outing, against Guinea-Bissau, whose lethal weapon was Armando. Without victory, Mali would be eliminated and the party would have lost its taste and solemnity. Right up to the final minute, the 20,000 spectators kept pushing the Eagles. Then came a free-kick in Mali's favor, with the score tied at one-all. Bakary Diakité dit Bakariny, a specialist in set-pieces, took the ball and broke through the Guinea-Bissau wall, which had meanwhile been barricaded. The Malian right-back was about to shoot, when Yacouba Traoré (aka Yaba) pushed him aside and took the free-kick. The ball grazed the foot of a player on the wall and beat the keeper: Mali's second goal and there was an explosion of joy in the stands, with fans falling over in a faint.

The Bissau-Guineans, bewildered by this blow, fought hard to equalize but to no avail! The Eagles of Mali are through to the ½ final and face Sierra Leone. Stade Malien de Bamako stopper Aboubacar Vieux Djan Traoré took advantage of a corner to head home the only goal of the match.  Mali are in the final and so far, the gamble has paid off, the only thing at stake is the trophy.

25,000 spectators witnessed the day of glory

In its day, bonuses were derisory, and for this final, the country's authorities made no promises but the commitment was obvious and reflected the motivation of the players. The presence and assistance of the Minister of Sport at the time boosted the youngsters' spirits.

The final was played on June 4, 1989.The Eagles won by 3 goals to 0. From the kick-off, they gave the Guineans no time to develop their game, or even try to impose their rhythm. In the 6th minute, Gaoussou Samaké scored an anthological goal.It was so beautiful that it's worth recalling the action. He inherited a ball deflected by the Guinean defence, cushioned it with his chest and unleashed a shot that would have skinned an ox. The ball bounced under keeper Fodé Laye Camara's bar and into the net. This early goal was bound to provoke a lively reaction from the opposition. The Malians were invigorated by their audacity in knocking out a Guinean side determined to confirm their flawless record. The equaliser came in the 23rd minute when the Senegalese assistant referee pointed to an offside position. The Guineans began to protest, forgetting that the game was still going on. The Malian players took advantage and scored the 2nd goal through Amadou Pathé Vieux Diallo, from a cross by Boubacar Sanogo. Both teams returned to the dressing room on that score.

The Guineans, caught off guard and drenched in water, were unable to recover from their nightmare. The Eagles of Mali, supported by over 25,000 spectators, shattered their opponents' hopes with a 3rd goal in the 71st minute from Boubacar Sanogo.Stadiste's leading striker at the time was set up by Amadou Pathé Vieux Diallo and he had no trouble finding a way past goalkeeper Fodé Laye Camara. That was the end of the myth, in the form of rumours, that Père Bouvier had cursed Malian soccer. And it's obvious that Mali will never win a trophy, because Père Blanc was dispossessed of his land by the Malian state (the current Stade Mamadou Konaté, which bore his name).

A plot of land and 15,000 euros as rewards

Mali's political authorities offered each player a plot of land to live on, and a modest sum (according to President Moussa Traoré) of 10,000,000 CFA francs (15,000 euros) to the team. It's practically the biggest reward since the African Games in Brazza (1965) and the AFCON in Yaoundé (1972). But alas!Different times!Other realities!

Today, the living conditions and treatment of the various national teams have evolved. The valiant Eagles of Mali were not fortunate enough to qualify for the AFCON in Algiers (1990). They were eliminated by the Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire. On April 28, 1991, Cameroon blocked their path to the 1992 AFCON in Senegal.

History will forever remember that this team was tightly knit and managed by a modest but competent technical staff. After the events of 1991, national coach Kidian Diallo and his staff resigned. At the time, Malians were looking for change at all levels, as a logical consequence of the events of March 26, 1991.

Football - Angola: Petro de Luanda suspended for 2 years for match-fixing

It's an earthquake in Angolan soccer. The emblematic club Petro de Luanda has been suspended for two years by the Angolan Football Federation for match-fixing.

Petro de Luanda suspended by the Angolan Football Federation for match-fixing

The Angolan Football Federation has suspended Petro de Luanda, despite their qualification for the Champions League. The sentence was very harsh indeed for Petro de Lunada, who have been banned from all sporting activities for two years. The Federation is blaming the club for its alleged involvement in corruption schemes.

Suspicions of match-fixing and corruption, raised in the audio leaked on social networks on June 9, led to the suspension of Petro de Luanda. In the audio, Petro player Márcio Luvambo confirms that the two-time champions paid Académica do Lobito three million kwanzas (3,300 euros) during a match in last season's Angolan Cup. Enough for the Disciplinary Council of the Angolan Football Federation to slam down its fist: "Suspension with immediate effect of Club Atlético Petro de Luanda from all soccer activities, for a period of two years, and consequently prevented from taking part in any sporting competition during this period, for failure to comply with the duty of collaboration to which it is subject. linked to the FAF", announced a press release.

Petro de Luanda strikes back. Petro Luanda has rejected the FAF's decision and announced that it does not intend to freeze its activities, and will even hold a press conference to "provide clarification and evidence of the validity of its position and the invalidity of the decision taken by the Angolan Football Federation.

Petro Atletico is one of eight clubs chosen to take part in the new African Super League competition. The legendary Angolan outfit has also qualified for the African Champions League.

Bayern Munich: Mané's rebirth or pressure under Tuchel?

It is a real race against time that Sadio Mané will certainly deliver during the second part of the season in the Bundesliga. Especially since his first was not very impressive from many aspects. The arrival of Thomas Tuchel on the bench may well allow the African Champion to finally take off in Bavaria.

He had arrived like a rock star in Bavaria. The arrival of Sadio Mané at Bayern Munich was relayed in all languages and on worldwide television. Sadio had just turned an English page that had opened in 2014 with Southampton before closing with Liverpool in 2022. Change of scenery, soccer and environment then for the African Champion bought at 32 million euros.

No apprehensions, the Senegalese international had not hesitated a minute when his phone rang. At the end of the line, the sporting director of Bayern, Hasan Salihamidzic. "I am really happy to finally be at FC Bayern Munich. We talked a lot and I felt a great interest from this great club from the beginning, so for me there was no doubt. This is the right time to take on this challenge. I want to achieve a lot with this club, also in Europe," he said in his first reaction on June 22, 2022.

Bayern is not only able to offer him an attractive sports project or to make him the ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who left for Barcelona at the same time. The Bavarians have broken the bank to offer Sadio Mané the best salary of the club with a monthly income of 2 million euros. But Sadio will know a difficult first part of the season. Between positioning on the field and injury, the Lion has not yet really brought an added value in the prestigious workforce of Bayern.

A long injury that spoiled everything
Before his injury on the eve of the World Cup, Sadio Mané had already finished playing 28 games in all competitions for 11 goals and five assists. However, since the beginning of the year 2023, he struggles to connect. What worries in Germany. Against Bayer Leverkusen before the international break at the end of March, Julian Nagelsmann has for example taken him out at the break. The player visibly lacked rhythm. Since his return to competition, his counter has not moved. It remains blocked at its 11 goals in all competitions.

Since his return to competition, his counter has not moved. It remains blocked at its 11 goals in all competitions.

The arrival of Tuchel can change everything
Sacked during the international break, Julian Nagelsmann had ended up being carried away by his coolness in his game. Worse, Bild even wrote that 7 players, including Sadio Mané, were against the way the technician was managing the matches. The media went further and wrote that the Senegalese number 10 was the reason for the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann. "If Oliver Kahn, chairman of the board, pointed to poor play and results as the reason for his dismissal, these would not be the only reasons. In recent weeks, the 35-year-old coach would have alienated part of the Munich dressing room, including Sadio Mané. And a quarrel with the Senegalese striker, who arrived last summer, would have precipitated his departure," we read.

His successor Thomas Tuchel would like to return to "Cesar what belongs to Cesar". In simple language, Tuchel has decided to position the African Golden Ball in the position he loves: the left wing.

International friendly: South Africa fights back to beat Mozambique

South Africa’s senior national team came from behind to record a 2-1 victory over Mozambique in Mpumalanga on Thursday, November 17.

South African coach Hugo Broos is preparing the team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia next year, so the South African football association organised friendly internationals against Mozambique and Angola, which will be played this coming Sunday, November 20.

Broos brought in some new faces into the team, including Miguel Timm and Monnapule Saleng, who have both been in good form for Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

But Bafana Bafana, as South Africa is affectionately known, did not make a good start to the game, going a goal down in the first 20 minutes. A shaky start led to Mozambique taking the lead through Nelson Divrassone.

Mozambique held onto the lead until half-time, but things changed in the second period as the hosts found their rhythm.

Bafana Bafana went on the attack a lot more and put Mozambique under pressure. The visitors succumbed to the pressure as Bafana Bafana found the equaliser through striker Bongukuhle Hlongwane from close range, 11 minutes into the second half.

That sparked some more life in Bafana Bafana as they went in search of another goal. It came through the boot of Hlongwane, who brilliantly finished after he was set up by Themba Zwane.

Broos seemed to be happy with the result and will be hoping that his players can show the same fighting spirit when they take on Angola on Sunday, which will be a tougher test.

International friendlies: South Africa edge neighbours Botswana - highlights

South Africa registered their second victory in a space of three days when they beat neighbours Botswana in an international friendly played at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 27 September.

On Saturday, the South African team known as Bafana Bafana cruised to a 4-0 victory over Sierra Leone at the same venue and were determined to continue where they left off when they came up against Botswana.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos made some changes to the team which played against Sierra Leone, giving the likes of Veli Mothwa, Siyanda Xulu, Khuliso Mudau, Siyanda Msani, Rushine de Reuck, Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Khanyisa Mayo, Goodman Mosele Ashley du Preez and Pule Mmodi a chance to start the game. Teboho Mokoena was the only player who was retained in the starting line-up.

Both sides tried to find their rhythm early on in the game, but there weren’t too many clear cut opportunities created in front of goal. Du Preez had two chances to give the hosts the lead, but his lack of experience at international was evident when he failed to convert.

South Africa finally took the lead seven minutes before half-time when Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Mokoena rattled the back of the net with a well taken free kick from just outside the box. Mokoena is known as a set piece specialist and he lived up to it by giving the hosts a lead.

Bafana Bafana had plenty of opportunities in the second half to extend the lead, but their decision making in the final third let them down.

Botswana also had chance of their own and could have in fact drawn level. The Zebras, however, were not clinical in front of goal.

Saudi Arabia: Mosimane confirmed as new Al Ahli SC coach

Three-time CAF Champions League winner Pitso Mosimane has been appointed the new coach of Al Ahli Saudi Club, the club confirmed on Sunday, 25 September.
Mosimane was last in charge of Egyptian giants Al Ahly and has been linked in numerous clubs on the African continent since he parted ways with the club in June.
Now, all the speculation has ended, with Al Ahli Saudi confirming the appointment of the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach. Mosimane replaces Uruguayan coach Robert Dante Siboldi, who joined the club earlier this year.
There are high expectations for Mosimane at his new club. The club got relegated to the second tier of Saudi Arabian football and are looking to make a return to the top flight
Al Ahli are seventh on the table after five games in the 18-team league. They have won two games, drew twice and lost once.
The 58-year-old Mosimane won two Champions League titles while he was in charge of Egyptian outfit Al Ahly, and led them to a third-place finish on two occasions at the FIFA Club World Cup. He is one of Ahly’s most successful coaches and will now be looking to make an even bigger impression to ensure the club returns to the top of Saudi Arabian football. The club has won the Saudi Professional League three times and have a record of 13 King’s Cup titles. A lot will be expected from Mosimane, who is used to deadline with pressure, having taken on some of the biggest jobs in his coaching career.
Ahli SC are based in Jeddah and were founded in 1937.

International friendlies: South Africa cruise past Sierra Leone - highlights

South Africa cruises to a 4-0 victory over Sierra Leone in an international friendly match played at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, 24 September.

South African coach Hugo Broos said he was using the game to prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia in March next year and he would no doubt have been impressed with how his players got the job done against Sierra Leone.

One of the positives from the game was the performance of midfielder Themba Zwane, who scored a brace on his return to the national side.

He showed great skill to score his first goal just before half time, beating the opposition defence with a brilliant turn in the box before producing a calm finish to give Bafana Bafana, as South Africa is affectionately known, a well-deserved lead.

The hosts made it two just four minutes into the second half when debutant Mihlali Mayamabela found the back of the net from close range after he was set up by Zakhele Lepasa, who was also making his first senior national team appearance.

Zwane, who plays for DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, scored his second of the game around the hour mark.

In the final 20 minutes of the game, Zwane’s club teammate Aubrey Modiba made it four when he connected with a loose ball in the box.

Bafana Bafana had 17 shots and nine were on target. They finished the game with 63 percent of ball possession.

Broos’ men will play their next international friendly against Botswana on Tuesday, 27 September.

South Africa: Why Bafana Bafana are playing Sierra Leone & Botswana

South Africa’s national team coach, Hugo Broos, has explained the decision to play Sierra Leone and Botswana in the upcoming international friendlies.

Initially, South Africa were hoping to secure a friendly match against Africa Cup of Nations runners-up Egypt, but it did not materialize. So, the South African Football Association was able to get Sierra Leone and Botswana for Bafana Bafana, as the team is affectionately known.

The match against Sierra Leone will be played on Saturday, 24 September, and the clash with Botswana will be played three days later on Tuesday, 27 September. Both matches will be played at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Broos will be using the match against Sierra Leone to prepare for the two 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia in March next year.

“We focus on these two games. Why against Sierra Leone and Botswana? They are good teams, but not the top teams. I think now it’s time to regain a little confidence for ourselves, but also from outside.

Secondly, a team of Sierra Leone is a little bit like Liberia. We have those two very important games (against Liberia) in March, and I think the game against Sierra Leone will be a good preparation for those games. We have to try to win these two friendly games. I know that there are some new faces in the team, and I hope that there will be players who can increase the quality in our team.”

Broos plans on giving all the players in his 23-man squad an opportunity to play in the friendly matches.

“I will give all the players time to play. I will try to have a team against Sierra Leone and I will try to have another team against Botswana, so that every player has an opportunity to show themselves and that every player has minutes to play. That’s also the purpose and goal of those friendly games.”

The Phobians are still without a victory as they were held to a 1:1 draw by Accra Great Olympics.
The Dade Boys took an earlier lead following a faulty pass from Konadu Yiadom who failed to pick goalkeeper Eric Antwi.
Yussif Razak capitalized on the error to go put the ball behind the net in the 8th minute.

Former WAFA skipper Konadu Yiadom despite the error in the early minute rose to the occasion to level things for the Phobians with a towering header with a few minutes to end of duration.

Aduana Stars after defeating Hearts of Oak on matchday 1 journeyed to the Baba Yara Sports stadium to put up a scintillating performance against Kumasi King Faisal.
The Ogyaa boys defeated Alhaji Karim Grunsah's side by 3-2. Goals from Bright Adjei, Kwame Adom Frimpong and Solomon Aboagye was enough to win it all for coach Paa Kwesi Fabian's side while Haruna Mohammed and Elia Elias had the goals for the home side.
