Frosinone: Cheddira is in good form

Moroccan striker Walid Cheddira impressed with a brace last weekend against Napoli (2-2), the club that loaned him to Frosinone. An international since 2022, the player will be one of the key assets for his side, who are fighting for Serie A survival in 18th place (28 points).

It was written.Walid Cheddira (26) could not fail to score against Napoli, the club that paid 7.5 million euros last August to bring him over from Bari and where he is under contract until June 30, 2026. The Moroccan international (6 caps) scored both his team's goals (2-2), jeopardizing the defending champions' chances of securing one of Italy's five Champions League berths for next season. At the Stadio San-Paolo, Cheddira scored his fifth and sixth goals in Serie A, and his seventh of the season, having already put Napoli ahead in December, when Frosinone won the Italian Cup 4-0 at the same venue.

Five goals in the last eight matches

The Canarini, who are in the race to stay in Serie A, are banking heavily on their striker, whose effectiveness has been undiminished since the 3-2 win over Juventus on February 25, after he had remained silent in the league since August 17 against Sassuolo (4-2)." He's in good form, as he's proved over the last two months ," comments Khalid Fouhami, former Atlas Lions goalkeeper and now coach of CS Kénifra (Botola 2). Prior to his brace on Neapolitan soil, Cheddiura had also scored against Lecce (1-1, March 3) and Lazio Rome, where he was unable to prevent the Lazio team losing (2-3, March 16).

In Morocco, his home country, the striker's performances are followed with real interest. Moroccans really got to know Walid Cheddira in September 2022, when Walid Regragui, coach of the Atlas Lions, called him up for a training camp and a series of friendly matches. The native of Loretto, in the province of Ancona (central Italy), even scored the only goal in a match against Madagascar (1-0) in Rabat. But the confrontation between the North Africans and the islanders was not a FIFA match.

" He really made his debut against Peru (2-0) and Paraguay (0-0) a few days later. At the time, he was playing for Bari in Serie B, and it's true that he wasn't very well known in Morocco," confirms Hassan Benabicha, one of the greatest players in the history of Wydad Casablanca.

Walid Regragui finally decided to call up Cheddira to take part in the World Cup in Qatar, but his presence in the Persian Gulf was limited to one appearance against Spain in the Round of 8 (0-0, 3-0 on penalties), and another, punctuated by an expulsion, against Portugal in the following round (1-0). Since the Qatari raid, the striker has made just two appearances for his country, against Brazil in a friendly (2-1, March 25, 2023) and in South Africa (1-2, June 17) in the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire. " Regragui had preselected him for the AFCON. He didn't select him, but he's keeping a close eye on his performances, and if he continues on his current path, Cheddira can look forward to a return to the national team in the near future," adds Fouhami. And maybe even in June against Zambia and Congo, in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Absent from the AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire

The player with dual Italian and Moroccan nationality, who cut his teeth in Series C and D with Sangiustese, Arezzo, Calcio Lecco, Mantova and Bari, which he helped to advance to Serie B at the end of the 2021-2022 season, presents an interesting profile, according to Hassan Benabicha. " He's a player who likes to make calls, who uses depth, whereas a lot of strikers prefer to receive the ball at their feet. He's generous, powerful and a real handful for defenders. Technically, he's not extraordinary, but he can improve.

Khalid Fouhami sees Walid Cheddira as a striker whose qualities could prove useful to a national team looking ahead to the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco and the 2026 World Cup." The upcoming events are important, and the coach is going to need players in top form. Walid Cheddira is in a good period, he plays for a small club in a big league, and from what I've read, Napoli are considering putting their faith in him next season", analyses the former Raja Casablanca and Atlas Lions goalkeeper (35 caps). "In my opinion, Cheddira still has room for improvement, particularly technically and in front of goal. If he plays for a big team like Napoli next season, we'll be able to better assess his level..."

Olympic Games 2024-Last round: Morocco and Nigeria go one better

Having beaten Zambia and South Africa respectively in the first leg, Morocco and Nigeria are in a strong position to secure their ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. But Cooper Queens and Banyana Banyana have not yet said their last word.

It's the home stretch for qualifying for the women's soccer tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The two women's teams representing the black continent will be announced on Tuesday April 2.And Morocco is in a favorable position. The Atlas Lionesses stunned Zambia on home turf in the first leg. At home, the African runners-up are more determined than ever to secure their ticket to the Olympic Games. This would be a first for this talented Moroccan team. "Winning there 2-1 is a good result. Now we're at home and the first match is forgotten. All we have to do is win. It's not every day in a player's career that you get to play in an Olympic qualifier," said Elodie Nahla Nakash.

Zambia, aiming for a second consecutive appearance at the Olympics, have not yet said their last word. With their backs against the wall, the Cooper Queens are going all out to topple the Moroccans in Rabat. And there's no shortage of talent in the Zambian squad to beat the Atlas Lionesses. Coach Bruce Mwape will be able to count on his star strikers, Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji.

South Africa confident despite defeat

Another team hoping to buck the trend is South Africa. The reigning African champions were beaten by Nigeria by the narrowest of margins (1-0). A scoreline that keeps the Banyana Banyana alive, who are not at all downcast by their defeat to the Super Falcons in the first leg of the fourth and final qualifying round for the 2024 Olympic Games.

"As we look forward to tomorrow's match, we've also looked at the footage from the first game. We know we're better than what we showed in Nigeria. We can do much better than that, and I think the second half showed how well we can play. This is a game we have to win," said South Africa coach Desiree Ellis. For their part, the Nigerians are playing it safe.Nigeria last took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. The Super Falcons missed out on the London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games.

Schedule for Tuesday, April 9

5:30pm: South Africa-Nigeria

8pm: Morocco-Zambia

OM: Azzedine Ounahi, bluff or real talent?

Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi (28 caps, 4 goals) has been a disappointment since his arrival at Olympique de Marseille, and is steadily losing ground with the Marseille fans. Management are already beginning to listen to offers for his departure this summer.

It's a long way from the young hopeful who impressed Spain coach Luis Enrique after a World Cup Round of 8 victory in Qatar. Azzedine Ounahi is playing his last cards close to the vest. His future with Olympique de Marseille is on the line after a series of disappointing performances. The Moroccan midfielder is still unable to find his place after arriving in January 2023 from Angers. While OM's former coaches have been blamed for this, supporters have been coming to their senses of late. His performance in the 3-1 defeat by Lille on Friday April 5 did nothing to help matters.

The Atlas Lion has been the target of virulent attacks in the French media. On the After Foot show, journalist Daniel Riolo pulled out all the stops and even went so far as to say that the 23-year-old is not at Ligue 1 level: "It's over. Who hopes for this player? He's burnt out. Ounahi, he arrived with a boulevard impossible when he doesn't have the level of National," declared Daniel Riolo on the airwaves of RMC. Nabil Djellit, known as the biggest defender of North African players in France, expresses his frustration at Azzedine Ounahi's inability to perform. "Ounahi, for too long we've said nothing. nHe's below par. 0 in duels, pretends to defend and we think he's good at passing the ball because he's elegant..." he said.

Towards a summer departure

With 19 Ligue 1 appearances to his name, including 14 as a first-team regular, Ounahi has had plenty of opportunity to show a different side. Recruited for just 8 million euros, the OM management believed they had found a bargain and could expect a capital gain on resale, based on the midfielder's great potential. If Transfermarkt values the player, eliminated with the Moroccan national team in the 8th final of the AFCON, at 12 million euros, it will be very difficult to see any manager getting out the checkbook to line up the tickets. An offer from Saudi Arabia miraculously landed on the OM president's table last winter, but Azzedine Ounahi was convinced he could pull it off and reverse the trend. With just a month to go before the end of the season, L'Equipe believes that the Moroccan's entourage is open to a departure this summer.

A number of clubs are keeping an eye on him, including Getafe and Villarreal in Spain. The Saudi Arabia option is still on the table. But Ounahi is dreaming of a move to the Premier League. In the meantime, Azzedine Ounahi could take advantage of the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Benfica to change Marseille fans' perception of him.

Olympic Games 2024-last round: Morocco do well in Zambia, Nigeria win at home

Morocco and Nigeria have taken an option for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. They respectively beat Zambia (1-2) and South Africa (1-0), in the first leg of the 4th and final round of Olympic qualifying.

Morocco are taking a good option for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Atlas Lionesses defeated Zambia 2-1 on Friday April 5 in Lusaka, as part of the 4th and final round of qualifying for the Olympic women's soccer tournament. The Moroccans opened the scoring late in the first half with a goal from Zineb Redouani (45+1). However, Lushomo Mweemba equalised for Zambia in the 80th minute. But Rosella Ayane crucified the Cooper Queens at the very end of the match (90+1). The Moroccans have thus completed a good operation ahead of the return leg on April 9 in Rabat. Morocco are aiming for their first appearance at the Olympic Games.

Nigeria do the minimum at home

Nigeria were also victorious. The Super Falcons did the essential at home in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the women's soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics. Up against South Africa, the reigning African champions, they won by the slimmest of margins, thanks in no small part to a penalty converted by Rasheedat Ajibade. Nigeria won a penalty late in the first half after Chiwendu Ihezuo was fouled in the box. Ajibade gave his team a narrow lead ahead of the return leg in Johannesburg on April 9.

It was also the Super Falcons' first win over South Africa since the 2018 WAFCON final. Nigeria last took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. The Nigerians missed out on the London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games.

Olympic Games-last round first leg (F): Clashes between Nigeria and South Africa; Zambia and Morocco

The first leg of the final African zone qualifying round for the 2 qualifying places in the women's soccer tournament for the Paris Olympics is being played this Friday, April 5. The matches pit Nigeria against South Africa and Zambia against Morocco.

The 4 teams in the running are all in the top 5 of the African rankings. All were at the last World Cup. The 4 countries playing for places at the Olympics are also the 4 who reached the semi-finals of the last WAFCON, so their encounters at this stage follow a kind of logic in view of past results.

A fiery Nigeria-South Africa

Nigeria is theNo. 1 African nation in the FIFA rankings. It was one of the 3 African nations to reach the last 8 at the CAN, being eliminated on penalties (4-2) after a thrilling match against England (0-0). They had previously finished3rd at the WAFCON 2022 in Morocco.

This Friday, this team plays South Africa to take an option on qualification for the Olympic Games.

Banyana Banyana are the 2nd-ranked African nation in the CAF rankings. South Africa is one of the 2 other African teams to have qualified for the Round of 8.They were eliminated by the Netherlands at this stage (2-0). They are also the defending WAFCON champions. To show the still undecided nature of the match, but above all its high level.

The 2 teams have met 10 times, with 3 victories for Nigeria, 4 for South Africa, and 3 matches ending goalless. South Africa won their last meeting at the last WAFCON (2-1). As a result, today's match promises to be a fierce duel by any standards.

Pre-match statements

Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum spoke of the opponent's qualities ahead of the home match."They're a very good team, they're the reigning African champions, so we have to have a certain respect for them.... They're very dangerous and I know their coach is doing a great job.

However, he adds that he has total confidence in his team. "But as I said before, I really like our team and I have every confidence in our players to perform well.

Banyana Banyana defender Lebohang Ramalepe, meanwhile, declared.

"To be honest, it's going to be a tough match.Don't forget that both teams didn't qualify for the last Olympics. So it's do or die!But we're ready because we know how important the game is. It's just a matter of going out there and doing our best (on the day)."

The team that emerges victorious from the two-legged tie will be drawn in Group C of the Olympic Games, joining Spain, Brazil and Japan.

Nigeria's Super Falcons will host Banyana Banyana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja. Kick-off is at 4pm GMT.

A promising Zambia-Morocco clash

In the2nd clash of the day, Zambia's Coopers Queens,4th in the CAF rankings, host Morocco,3rd in the African rankings. It's another meeting between two teams who took part in the last World Cup.Zambia, who exited the competition in the1st round, and Morocco, who were knocked out in the 8th round by France.

Previously at the WAFCON, the Atlas Lionesses finished 2nd at home, while Zambia finished 3rd. The match therefore pits almost the best of the continent against each other. It should be a tight affair in both legs. However, Morocco will have to watch out for the Zambian forward line, with the Barbra Banda-Rachael Kundananji pair, the 2 most expensive players in the world, who are unrivalled strikers.

The Moroccan coach who led Spain to the world title, Jorge Vilda, will no doubt have a special plan against them.

The history of meetings between the 2 teams speaks for Zambia, who have won 2 of the 3 matches between them, including the last 2 in 2023 (2-6 and 0-2). The3rd match ended in a draw.

Pre-match comments

Racheal Kundananji had this to say about the home match. "I don't think it will be an easy task. We just need to be ready for the challenge because Morocco are a great team and they are also aiming to qualify. They're also studying us, so we need to be perfectly prepared," she said.

For her part, Moroccan international Sakina Ouazraoui declares. "I don't think we're going to put any more pressure on ourselves than that.Zambia are a team we know very well.We played them in a double-header last September. The result wasn't in our favor (editor's note: two defeats: 2-0 and 6-2) but I think we're a completely different team now. We're more ambitious and our game has evolved. One thing's for sure: we believe in ourselves and we'll fight to the end.

All the ingredients seem to be in place for a pleasant, high-level match. And that's all the crowd want! The match kicks off at 17:00 GMT.

The team that wins this 4th and final qualifying round will share Pool B at the Olympic Games with the USA, Australia and Germany.

Retained by Walid Regragui, Soufiane Rahimi is currently swimming in happiness. The striker from Al-Ain (United Arab Emirates) will undoubtedly want to break the mould if he gets the chance to play."Any player dreams of being part of a group like this, of being called up to the national team. It's a great honor for me.I hope I can live up to the expectations of the national coach and the fans too," Rahimi told the communications department of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. The 27-year-old striker is not here to make up the numbers for the Atlas Lions.

Rahimi intends to stay with the club, and his "ambition is to add value to the team". Rahimi has scored 17 goals and provided 7 assists in 30 matches in all competitions for his Emirati club. "I was away for a while, but I'm finally back where I belong. Pulling on the national team jersey is a heavy responsibility. We represent an entire nation, and I hope to be worthy of that responsibility. My wish is to bring joy to all Moroccans," he continues. Soufiane Rahimi has 16 caps and 6 goals to his name for the national team. However, he has not returned to the national team since June 13, 2022.

Morocco face Angola on Friday March 22, followed by Mauritania on Tuesday March 26, during the international break.

Morocco - Eliesse Ben Seghir: "My choice is a bold one".

Unlike some dual nationals who find it difficult to make a choice for their international career, Eliesse Ben Seghir did not find himself in this dilemma. The neo-Lion of the Atlas already knew which direction his footballing future would take, between France and Morocco.

As Walid Regragui's newest recruit, Eliesse Ben Seghir already knew which jersey he would wear for his international career. Although France was holding out its arms to him, the Monaco ace didn't hesitate when the Atlas Lions' coach explained his plans. "I'm lucky enough to represent two great footballing nations: France and Morocco," he points out.And he continues."My choice was therefore a difficult one, even if it was carefully considered. I made this decision a month ago, just as I was coming back from injury. It's also a relief for me. I made this choice based on my roots, both my parents being Moroccan," explained the young Monegasque attacking midfielder.

"Why wait when you know what you want?"

Despite his lack of playing time, Regragui took the initiative to lure the 19-year-old player early on. After all, Eliesse Ben Seghir has only played 9 matches in French Ligue 1 this season. For 169 minutes of playing time. But that didn't deter Walid from putting Eliesse Ben Seghir's name on his shortlist. Much to the youngster's delight, in fact. "I accept this choice, it's a personal decision. It's a bold decision, but why wait when you know what you want?Playing immediately with the senior team also played a role. When Morocco calls you, it's hard to refuse," continues the Monegasque.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder trained at AS Monaco, where he rose through the ranks to reach the first team in 2022. With the French national team, the attacking midfielder played in the youth categories, taking part in the Euro U19 qualifiers and the Maurice Revello tournament in 2023.

Morocco will play two friendlies against Angola (March 22) and Mauritania (March 26).

Football - Morocco- RC Lens: Neil El Aynaoui's new dimension

Neil El Aynaoui, 22, is currently shining for Racing Club de Lens. Son of Younes, former world number 14 in tennis, the Atlas Lion Cub has taken on a new dimension this season, and is establishing himself in the Sang et Or's midfield.

Neil El Aynaoui is enjoying a memorable season with Racing Club de Lens. The young Moroccan (22) has impressed in midfield for the Sang et Or since the start of the season. Having arrived last summer from Nancy Lorraine (for 600,000 euros), the Lion Cub of the Atlas has played 23 matches in all competitions, including 13 starts, scoring one goal and providing two assists. A first season at the highest level he certainly hadn't dreamed of.

"I try to do my job, concentrate on myself and on everything I have to do. It's not my nature to turn up and have everyone notice me. Now, if you'd asked me a year ago if I was going to play this much, I wouldn't have thought it. It can only encourage me in my day-to-day work," confided the main man concerned in comments relayed by L'Équipe.

His hard work and unfailing discipline were noticed by his coach, Franck Haise. The latter gave him his first start against Olympique de Marseille on Matchday 12 (won by Lens 1-0) and the Moroccan responded with a fine performance, praised by Haise after the match.Related article: Liga Portugal: Simon Benza scores with Braga

"He's remarkable in training. At some point, I had to give him the opportunity to express himself at the start of a match. I have confidence in him and he lived up to expectations. He played a great game defensively and offensively. He showed a lot of personality. He's been working well for a very long time now, and his inputs are good. It's only natural that he should get his chance," he said after the final whistle, according to Le Figaro.

Guided by a father who excelled in tennis

Renowned for his solidity, Neil El Aynaoui also stands out for his high volume of play, maturity and professionalism.Qualities instilled from an early age. He grew up with a father who was a professional athlete. El Aynaoui is the son of Younes, the world's top 15 tennis player (November 2003), who also has five titles to his name, including a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open and the US Open, and a round-of-16 finish at Roland-Garros.

"My parents are an inspiration

They instilled in me all those little details of the great pros. My father never forced me. He let us touch everything. Soccer was my passion. I was lucky enough to be trained at the club where my whole family was present (Nancy). My mother was with me when I arrived at Lens (last summer)", admits the young midfielder in comments relayed by L'Equipe.

An unfinished taste with Morocco

The young man has one cap to his name with the U23s.It was during the victory over Brazil (1-0) on September 7.A match marked by tragedy. The following day, a terrible earthquake struck the Kingdom of Morocco. "I was in my hotel room after playing against Brazil the day before. All of a sudden, I saw the TV in my room start to move, and it almost fell off. I went outside to try and find out what was going on. I never thought I'd experience such a catastrophe on my first cap," he recalled in an interview with L'Équipe.

With his current performances with RC Lens, he is well on the way to competing in the 2024 Olympic Games with the Atlas Lions and why not join Walid Regragui's team?

Morocco - Amine Adli: The Atlas Lion's new dimension

Having enjoyed a fine season with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 8 goals and providing 8 assists in all competitions, Amine Adli is positioning himself as the man to watch for the Moroccan national team ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

The season continues to run its course after the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations was won by the host country, Côte d'Ivoire. Expected to be one of the favorites to win the trophy, Morocco's failure to reach the Round of 8 has put pressure on the team that will host the next edition. Certain players, such as Amine Adli, will have to step up to the plate if they are to guide the Atlas Lions to the summit in 2025.

A seamless transition to power

Amine Adli showed his potential on the pitch in Côte d'Ivoire at the African Cup of Nations. With less than a year and a half to go, the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker is no longer the future, but the present. With a goal and an assist in his club's 1-2 victory over Heidenheim on Saturday, February 17, the Atlas Lion has established himself as one of the Bundesliga leaders' key players. With 8 goals and 8 assists in 23 games, the 23-year-old creator has won over his coach, who makes no secret of his importance to the team."Amine Adli is in good condition. We need his energy, his qualities and his deep runs," says Xabi Alonso. This season of blossoming on the world stage is also the beginning of his history with the Moroccan national team.

A staunch defender of Regargui

On his way to winning the Bundesliga with a fantastic season, Amine Adli is well on the way to becoming the new darling of the Moroccan national team. After the elimination, he was quick to take a stance on Walid Regragui's future, wanting him to continue at the helm of the national team."I'm very happy. The whole squad is behind the coach. I don't think there were any questions to ask. He's like a big brother, someone very important to us, a great coach. We're all with him, we appreciate him enormously. Failures happen in soccer. I know that the coach wanted to do something great for all Moroccans. Inchallah, with him and all his staff, we'll come back stronger," he confided to Canal.
