All is not rosy for host nation Mauritania as they could pack their bags out of the competition earlier than expected. Mauritania lost (2-1) to Uganda on Saturday for their last group A game in the competition. They have three points on third spot yet all hopes of playing the quarterfinals is not lost. Unfortunately, they no longer have the fate of their destiny in their own hands.
They must wait until the end of the group matches to know if they will be part of the two best third places of the tournament.
After a 2-0 win over Mozambique on Wednesday, Mauril Njoya's men had to win against the Cranes to validate their ticket. The qualifying match finally turned to a big disappointment. For despite a lead on the scoreboard at the break, the Mourabitounes completely cracked in the second half.
Qualification for the host will indeed depend on the results of the third day of the groups B and C. With three points, they can therefore pray that the Central African Republic and Namibia do not win. The two face respectively Tunisia and Burkina Faso, co-leaders of group B. A victory for Gambia and Tanzania ahead of Ghana and Morocco would also dampen their chances of qualification for Mauritania.
