For the first time in their history, Diables Rouges and Lions face each other in an official competition. The match is scheduled for this Wednesday, July 1, 8:00 p.m. GMT, at Lumen Field in Seattle, in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.

Both teams experienced a rollercoaster group stage. Held to a draw by Egypt (1-1) and then slowed down by Iran (0-0), Belgium eventually cruised past New Zealand (5-1), which secured them first place in Group G. This victory says a lot: the Red Devils became the first European team since England in 1990 to finish top of a group after failing to win their first two matches.

Senegal’s journey was even more turbulent. Against France, Pape Thiaw’s men faltered after a good first half (losing 1-3), then fell painfully against Norway (2-3). With their backs against the wall, they crushed Iraq 5-0 on the final matchday to clinch their ticket as the best third-placed team, the only nation with three points to qualify this way, edging out Iran, South Korea, and Scotland.

Breaking Free

For Senegal, the ambition is clear: to reach the quarterfinals, a stage they haven’t approached since the legendary run of 2002. The context is unique: the Lions arrive crowned as Africa Cup of Nations champions, won on the field against Morocco, while awaiting the final decision from CAS. This is more than enough to fuel a desire for revenge.

Above all, Senegal wants to build on the momentum from the win over Iraq to (finally) kickstart its World Cup. "Belgium is a very strong team with huge individual talents and a very solid collective. But for us, we managed to get out of a very tough group (with France, Norway, and Iraq, ed.), so we’ll try to push for victory against the Red Devils," Pape Thiaw said in the pre-match press conference.

On the Belgian side, this is a generation nearing the end of its cycle, led by Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Romelu Lukaku, looking to prove they still have the resources to aim high after early exits in 2022 and at Euro 2024. Rudi Garcia, at the helm since January 2025, is staking part of his credibility on this performance.

In pure statistical terms, Belgium has never faced a sub-Saharan African national team at the World Cup, and the memory of Morocco, the Red Devils’ shock conquerors in 2022, inevitably lingers over Seattle.
