All original articlesThe 3rd day of CAN 2025 begins this Monday, December 29. In group A, everything remains possible in posters that make salivate with Morocco, the host country, which faces Zambia, while Mali defies the Comoros. For now, no country is eliminated or qualified in this pool.
Group A leader of their AFCON 2025 with 4 points, Morocco is not immune however. The organizing country, still not qualified, may fear an earthquake before facing Zambia this Monday at 19h universal time. Even if the situation is simple for the Moroccans, who would be qualified and sure to finish first in case of victory, there is no total serenity before the duel against Chipolopolo.
Hakimi, a life-saving return
Indeed, the first half against the Comoros (victory 2-0 with goals in the 2nd half) and the 1-1 draw against Mali hinted at flaws that could be exploited by the Zambians. Moreover, several executives, including Sofyane Amrabat, are not like available today. However, there is a reason to smile for the Atlas Lions: Achraf Hakimi. The team’s boss will be back. Morocco will seek to win to be first, and stay in Rabat, and benefit from an affordable opponent in the last 16. Otherwise, there is a risk of finishing 2nd, even 3rd, and finding a touher opponent in the last 16 round.
On the Zambian side, there are also not too many questions to ask. With 2 draws, Patson Daka’s teammates are third. A win would be synonymous with an 8th final, and even 1st place if Mali falls to the Comoros. Even in case of a draw, the Zambians could qualify as part of the best third-place players.
Mali - Comoros Reunion
In the other clash of group A, at the same time, Mali faces the Comoros. The Malians are second with two draws in as many outings. A victory in front of the Comoros would allow the Eagles to pass the first round, and why not win the 1st place if at the same time, Zambia succeeds in beating Morocco, or tie a draw. One point could however be enough for the Malians to qualify among the best third place.
On the Comoros side, there are no questions to ask. With a point, only a win can allow Cœlacanthes to join the last 16 for the second time in their history after the 2021 edition in Cameroon.
Note that this match marks the reunion between Malians and Comorians since they were in the same qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup. Mali had a 3-0 record against the Comoros both in the first leg and the second.
