In a Cameroonian selection seeking stability in the midfield, Carlos Baleba emerged as an unexpected balance point during this competition. Without any special effects, the player from Brighton settled into the heart of the game, to the point of becoming a reference in the organization of the Indomptables Lions winning MOTM accolades.

For someone having a go at the AFCON for his first time, Baleba has gradually changed status over the course in Morocco.

Settled in a context marked by the absence of regular shareholders, the 22-year-old player took advantage of this window to settle permanently in the midfield of the Indomitable Lions. His match against South Africa in the last 16 (2-1), concluded with a distinction of man of the match, served as an eye-opener: Cameroon holds there a player capable of absorbing pressure and bring continuity in the game.

Ramping up
This rise in power is largely explained by its ability to respond to a structural gap. Deprived of experienced profiles like Zambo Anguissa or Martin Hongla, the selection had to recompose its axis. Baleba then took on a hybrid role, both recuperator and first raiser, without the team losing balance. Alongside Arthur Avom, he contributes to rejuvenating a sector often criticized for its lack of consistency, while ensuring some tactical rigor.

On a strictly technical level, Baleba's contribution is measured in data as well as in visual impression. Against the Bafana Bafana, he accumulated defensive interventions while remaining involved in the transition phases. Able to carry the ball forward, break the first opponent’s curtain or secure possession, the native of Douala ticks several boxes of the modern "box-to-box" midfielder. His playing remains sober, rarely spectacular, but effective in managing slow times as well as in accelerating the tempo.

Europe is going crazy for Baleba
Logically, these performances have not escaped the attention of European recruiters. Already installed in the Premier League with Brighton, Baleba sees his rating climb as the competition progresses. Clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool or Tottenham are regularly mentioned, while Brighton has a firm position on its valuation now estimated at 60 million euros on Transfermarkt. More than just a media frenzy, the AFCON acts here as an amplifier of a potential already identified in the club.

It now remains to be confirmed in the face of even stronger opposition to come. The quarter-final scheduled this Friday against Morocco is an additional test, both tactically and mentally. Baleba will be observed there for his ability to repeat efforts, manage high-level pressure in the middle and maintain his influence in a match with high intensity. Whatever happens, his tournament has already clarified one thing: Cameroon now has an environment around which it can build, at least in the medium term.
