All original articlesThis Tuesday, September 29, 15 matches are scheduled for the second day of qualifiers. The Lions need to bounce back in Ethiopia after their draw in Mozambique. Beaten by Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana will face Gambia, who won their opening match.
Ethiopia - Senegal (Group J, 1pm): bouncing back at altitude
Senegal did not have a successful start. On Friday, the Lions were held to a draw by Mozambique (1-1). They travel to Bahir Dar, at some 1,800 meters above sea level, a physical test for Pape Thiaw's squad. The local press sums up the match as follows: a tricky away game, where altitude management will be key.
Ethiopia has yet to score in these qualifiers. They lost 1-0 in Sudan on the first matchday. In Group J, Sudan, who won their opener, lead with 3 points. Senegal and Mozambique each have 1. The Ethiopians have none and are playing their campaign in front of their home fans. A misstep could already make qualification tricky for the Lions. A win, on the other hand, would let them climb back into contention.
At 1pm as well, Mozambique hosts Sudan in the group's other match.
The Black Stars can't afford another mistake
Ghana lost right away in Abidjan (0-2 against Côte d'Ivoire) in the big match of the first gameweek. The Black Stars remain on zero points and face Gambia, who beat Somalia 2-1. The Scorpions thus started their campaign with a win and can take the lead in the group.
For Ghana, another defeat would be a heavy blow at this stage of qualification. Victory is almost mandatory to get back in the race, especially since Mohammed Kudus and his teammates missed the last AFCON.
In the same group, at 7pm, Somalia hosts Côte d'Ivoire. The Elephants, who beat Ghana, have the chance to build momentum.
Cameroon aiming for a streak, Cape Verde seeking revival
Victorious 3-1 over Comoros on the opening day, Cameroon travels to Brazzaville to take on Congo. A second win in as many games would put the Indomitable Lions in a commanding position.
Conversely, Cape Verde needs to react after their defeat in Mali on the first matchday. The Blue Sharks host Rwanda with a single goal: victory.
