In front of 13,073 spectators at the Al Madina stadium in Rabat, the DRC perfectly launched their AFCON though not in grand style. The Leopards won (1-0) over Benin thanks to a goal by Theo Bongonda in the 16th minute. They temporarily take the lead of group D while waiting for the match between Senegal and Botswana at 15h GMT, in Tangier.

Benin dominates but led at the break

Before the start of the match, the DRC was placed as a favorite by many observers. After the first 45 minutes, it was Benin who made the game. The Cheetahs were not cold in the eyes. 65% possession, the Beninese selection had the ball but was not sharp in the opponent's half.

Very attentive, the DRC launched some offensive actions. In the 16th minute, on a poor assessment by defender Roche, the Leopards open the scoring. Théo Bongonda, the right winger of Spartak Moscow. The Congolese selection scored on their only shot on target in the first period. Afterwards, Chancel Mbemba and his teammates were able to contain the few offensive attacks from Benin led by Dodo Dokou, Tosin Aiyegun, Jodel Dossou or even Imourana Hassane.

The DRC demonstrates game management in second period
Only one goal scored and it was enough for the DRC. In all experience, the men of Sébastien Desabre managed the second period until the final whistle. Even in management, the Leopards were aggressive offensively. They could have scored more goals if Cédric Bakambu had been realistic. His goal scored in the 47th minute on a perfect cross by Nathanaël Mbuku was later canceled by VAR. In the 70th minute, alone against the Beninese goalkeeper, Saturnin Allagbé, the Real Betis striker could not find the loophole. His shot was deflected by the Cheetah’s keeper.

Deprived of 5 starters including Captain Steve Mounié, the Guépards could not achieve the feat. They are still running behind their first victory in the African Cup of Nations.

For the next match, Benin plays Botswana on Saturday, December 27 at 12:30 GMT, at the Olympic stadium Annexe Complexe Sportif Prince Abdellah, in Rabat. As for the DRC, it defies Senegal on the same day at 15h GMT, at the Grand Stade de Tangier.
