The Cleveland Cavaliers stand as one of the NBA's most compelling franchises, embodying the resilience and unwavering loyalty that defines their rust-belt city. Founded in 1970, the Cavaliers have transformed from expansion team underdogs into championship contenders, forever etching their place in basketball history with their miraculous 2016 NBA Championship that ended Cleveland's 52-year major sports drought.

Under the ownership of Dan Gilbert, who purchased the franchise in 2005, the Cavaliers have established themselves as a progressive organization committed to both on-court excellence and community engagement. Gilbert's stewardship has seen the team through its greatest triumph and continues to drive their championship aspirations, though the current season presents new challenges as the franchise navigates without established leadership positions in the front office and coaching staff.

The 2016 championship remains the crown jewel of Cavaliers history, achieved through LeBron James's triumphant return to his home state and one of the most dramatic Finals comebacks ever witnessed. That championship team, anchored by the "Big Three" of James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love, overcame a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors to deliver Cleveland its long-awaited title. The moment when James collapsed to the floor in tears after Kyrie's decisive three-pointer became an indelible image of hometown heroism and perseverance.

Seven retired jerseys hang in the rafters, honoring the franchise's greatest contributors. LeBron James's #23 represents the pinnacle of Cavaliers achievement, while Mark Price (#25), Brad Daugherty (#43), and Larry Nance (#22) symbolize the competitive spirit of earlier eras. Austin Carr (#34), the franchise's first star, Bingo Smith (#7), and Nate Thurmond (#42) complete this distinguished group, each representing different chapters in the team's evolving story.

The current roster, sporting a solid 43-27 record as of March 2026, reflects a franchise in transition yet maintaining competitive relevance. While the specific composition of today's team continues the Cavaliers' tradition of combining veteran leadership with emerging talent, the organization remains committed to building sustainable success rather than quick fixes.

Beyond the legendary names, players like Zydrunas Ilgauskas brought international flair to Cleveland, while Anderson Varejao's energy and Campy Russell's scoring prowess contributed to the franchise's rich tapestry. Each player reinforced the Cavaliers' identity as a team that values heart, determination, and connection to the community.

The Cavaliers' story resonates particularly with African basketball fans, representing the universal themes of perseverance through adversity and the power of never abandoning hope. Their championship journey serves as inspiration across the continent, proving that sustained belief and proper leadership can overcome any obstacle. As the franchise continues building toward future success, they carry forward the lessons of their championship experience while embracing the responsibility that comes with being Cleveland's basketball standard-bearers in the competitive Eastern Conference Central Division.

History fr

"Cleveland, this is for you!" crie LeBron, offrant à la ville son premier championnat NBA.

The Cleveland Cavaliers entered the NBA in 1970 as an expansion franchise, bringing professional basketball to a city hungry for sporting excellence. Named through a fan contest, the "Cavaliers" moniker reflected the swashbuckling spirit owner Nick Mileti hoped to instill in Cleveland's basketball culture.

The franchise's early years were marked by struggle and perseverance. Throughout the 1970s, the Cavaliers battled mediocrity, though they managed their first playoff appearance in 1976. The team found modest success in the late 1980s and early 1990s under coach Lenny Wilkens, reaching the playoffs multiple times but never breaking through to championship contention. Players like Brad Daugherty, Mark Price, and Larry Nance Sr. became beloved figures during this competitive era.

Everything changed in 2003 when Cleveland selected LeBron James with the first overall draft pick. The Akron-born phenom transformed the franchise overnight, bringing unprecedented excitement to Quicken Loans Arena. James led the Cavaliers to their first NBA Finals appearance in 2007, though they fell to the San Antonio Spurs. Despite regular season success and playoff runs, Cleveland couldn't capture the ultimate prize during James's first tenure, culminating in his controversial departure to Miami in 2010.

The post-LeBron years saw the franchise rebuild through the draft, selecting Kyrie Irving in 2011. However, the organization's fortunes dramatically shifted in 2014 when James announced his return to Cleveland, declaring his intention to bring a championship to his home state. Paired with Irving and newly acquired Kevin Love, the Cavaliers assembled a formidable "Big Three."

The 2016 NBA Finals provided the most iconic moment in franchise history. Facing the 73-win Golden State Warriors, Cleveland fell behind 3-1 in the series, appearing destined for heartbreak. However, James delivered on his championship promise in spectacular fashion. The Cavaliers became the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 Finals deficit, with James's chase-down block on Andre Iguodala and Kyrie Irving's clutch three-pointer in Game 7 serving as defining moments. The championship ended Cleveland's 52-year major sports drought and validated James's homecoming decision.

Cleveland returned to the Finals in 2017 and 2018 but fell to Golden State both times, unable to replicate their magical 2016 run. James's second departure in 2018, this time to the Los Angeles Lakers, marked the end of the franchise's most successful era.

The post-2018 period has seen the Cavaliers rebuild once again, focusing on developing young talent and establishing a sustainable foundation. Under various leadership changes, the organization has worked to identify the next generation of stars while honoring the legacy of their 2016 championship team. Key players during this rebuilding phase have included Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and Jarrett Allen, as the franchise seeks to return to playoff contention.

Throughout their history, the Cavaliers have called Cleveland home, playing initially at Cleveland Arena before moving to the Coliseum at Richfield in 1974, and finally settling at downtown Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena (now Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse) in 1994. The franchise has maintained its original name and city throughout its existence, creating deep roots in Northeast Ohio's basketball community.

As of 2026, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue building toward future success while celebrating their historic 2016 championship. That title remains the crown jewel of the franchise, representing not just basketball excellence but the fulfillment of a city's long-held dreams. The organization's commitment to developing young talent and maintaining competitive relevance ensures that Cleveland basketball remains an integral part of the NBA landscape, forever changed by that magical night in June 2016 when the drought finally ended.

The New Orleans Pelicans franchise began its NBA journey in 1988 as the Charlotte Hornets, marking the return of professional basketball to North Carolina. Founded by businessman George Shinn, the team quickly captured the hearts of fans with their distinctive teal and purple uniforms and energetic brand of basketball. The franchise's early years were defined by the dynamic duo of Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, who brought excitement and athleticism to the Spectrum Center.

The Charlotte era reached its pinnacle in the mid-1990s when the team acquired point guard Muggsy Bogues and later welcomed Glen Rice. Despite their popularity and competitive play, the Hornets struggled to advance deep into the playoffs. The most memorable moment of this period came during the 1993 playoffs when the Hornets upset the heavily favored Boston Celtics in the first round, with Larry Johnson's iconic four-point play becoming an instant classic in franchise lore.

Financial difficulties and ownership disputes led to a dramatic relocation in 2002, when the franchise moved to New Orleans and became the New Orleans Hornets. The transition was challenging initially, but the team found new life in the Crescent City. The arrival of point guard Chris Paul in 2005 marked a transformative moment for the franchise, as the young star quickly established himself as one of the league's elite floor generals.

The Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005 forced the team into temporary exile, splitting their home games between New Orleans and Oklahoma City during the 2005-06 season, officially becoming the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. This period tested the franchise's resilience, but they returned full-time to New Orleans the following season with renewed community support.

Under Chris Paul's leadership, accompanied by David West and later Tyson Chandler, the Hornets experienced their most successful period. The 2007-08 season stands as the franchise's greatest achievement, as they won 56 games and secured the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Paul's spectacular play earned him universal acclaim, and the team's playoff run energized the entire city of New Orleans during its post-Katrina recovery.

The franchise underwent another significant transformation in 2013 when new owner Tom Benson changed the team name to the New Orleans Pelicans, adopting Louisiana's state bird as their new identity. This rebrand coincided with the arrival of Anthony Davis, the generational big man selected first overall in 2012. Davis brought unprecedented talent to New Orleans, showcasing a unique combination of size, athleticism, and skill that made him one of the NBA's most dominant players.

Despite Davis's individual brilliance, including multiple All-Star selections and his iconic performance in the 2018 playoffs sweep of the Portland Trail Blazers, the team struggled to build consistent success around their superstar. The period was marked by coaching changes, roster turnover, and ultimately Davis's trade request, which culminated in his departure to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2019.

The post-Davis era began with promise as the team acquired a substantial package of young talent and draft picks. Zion Williamson's arrival as the first overall pick in 2019 generated unprecedented excitement, with his explosive athleticism and powerful playing style creating a new identity for the franchise. Alongside emerging stars like Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum, the Pelicans have worked to establish a competitive foundation.

Throughout its history, the franchise has never captured an NBA championship, but it has provided memorable moments and passionate basketball across three different cities. From the Charlotte Hornets' upset victories to Chris Paul's magnificent seasons in New Orleans, and now with Zion Williamson leading the current generation, the organization continues to chase its elusive first championship while serving as an integral part of New Orleans' cultural fabric and sporting identity.
