A leading figure in South Africa’s campaign to host the 2010 World Cup, Danny Jordaan is undoubtedly one of the country’s best-known sports administrators, with a profile extending across Africa and beyond. He has held several positions at FIFA.
Jordaan had been under investigation for several months over the alleged misappropriation of 1.3 million rand (around 68 000 euros) from his own federation to hire a public relations and security company for his personal benefit. He was arrested alongside another official and a businessman.
Executive committee members push for his resignation
He is due in court this Wednesday afternoon and remains in charge of the federation for now. However, according to information gathered by Sport News Africa, several people, including members of his own executive committee, are quietly pushing for him to resign.
As in neighbouring Lesotho, Jordaan faces growing criticism within his own federation over a management style often described as “dictatorial”.
