Four months before tip-off at the 2025 Women's AfroBasket, scheduled for 25 July to 3 August in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, ten of the twelve participating teams are now known. FIBA Africa (the International Basketball Federation) has just confirmed the award of wildcards to Egypt and Mozambique, completing the list of qualified nations.
Egypt secured their wildcard after finishing 2nd in the Zone 5 qualifying tournament, held in Cairo last February. The Egyptians lost the final to Uganda 74-63. Mozambique, for their part, received their wildcard after a narrow defeat to Angola over a two-game series played in Luanda, going down 109-108 on aggregate.
Two places still to be awarded
Following this announcement, FIBA Africa said the last two wildcards for the 2025 Women's AfroBasket will be awarded in April, completing the line-up of 12 teams who will compete in Abidjan. The competition promises to be a flagship event for African basketball. Games will be played at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, an iconic venue in Ivorian sport. The top four teams in the tournament will qualify for one of the qualifying tournaments for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026.
