The president's chair at the Algerian Football Federation is now vacant. In a video posted on the FAF's official website, Djahid Zefizef announced his resignation on Sunday 16 July. "This statement relates to the recent CAF General Assembly, held a few days ago in Côte d'Ivoire, at which I stood for election to win a seat on the CAF Executive Committee. It was one of the most important goals we have been working towards. We did everything and used every legal means to achieve that goal, but unfortunately it was not enough," Zefizef explained.

"In that case, I am announcing my resignation as president of the Algerian Football Federation, and I would like to thank the Algerian people and the authorities for the great support and the trust they have placed in me. I wish Algerian football all the best," the former FAF president concluded.

Two setbacks too many

Having taken charge of the FAF less than a year ago, Zefizef never got his tenure off the ground, hampered by heavy criticism from the moment he took office. An influential figure at the FAF for 10 years, as a member of the CAF audit committee, general manager of the national team and then federation president, he hastened his own downfall with two high-profile bids that were doomed to fail. Competing against Morocco to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Guinea withdrew, Djahid Zefizef lost out to the Moroccans, who are expected to host the continental tournament after the 2024 edition in Côte d'Ivoire. The final blow came at the 45th CAF General Assembly, where the now former FAF president suffered a major humiliation by losing his seat on the CAF Executive Committee representing the UNAF zone (North Africa) for the 2023-2027 term to his Libyan counterpart Abdelhakim Al Shelmani.
