Born on 31 May 1950 in Abidjan, Alphonse Bilé quickly made a name for himself with his dexterity and his instinct as a playmaker. Captain of the Elephants from 1976 to 1984, he embodied the heart of that golden generation.
It was at the 1981 Afrobasket in Mogadishu that Bilé wrote his name into history. Under his leadership, Côte d'Ivoire won their first ever continental title, which also meant a historic qualification for the 1982 FIBA World Cup in Colombia. The captain was the engine of his side, mixing pinpoint passes with deadly shooting and lifting his team-mates to champion level.
The magician turned strategist
In 1985, Côte d'Ivoire hosted the Afrobasket. This time, Bilé swapped his jersey for the coach's suit. But the story stayed the same: victory followed. In front of a roaring crowd in Abidjan, he guided the Elephants to their second continental title, cementing their place among the leading nations of African basketball.

That performance, driven by sharp tactical nous, qualified them for the 1986 FIBA World Cup in Spain. More than a coach, Bilé became a mentor to an entire generation, passing on his passion and expertise with infectious intensity.
A builder in the service of the continent
Bilé did not stop at the sidelines. A visionary, he took the reins of the Ivorian Basketball Federation (1994-2001), where he modernised structures and breathed new life into the sport in his home country. But his impact went beyond Ivorian borders.
In 2001, at the Rabat Congress, he became secretary general of FIBA Africa. Under his leadership, the organisation underwent a profound transformation: expanded competitions, professionalised structures and the construction of a modern headquarters in Abidjan, which is today a source of pride for African basketball. Thanks to his efforts, the sport is thriving across the continent and attracting more and more talent.
A giant of many talents
What makes Alphonse Bilé unique is his incredible versatility. A cardiologist and specialist in sports traumatology, he put his skills at the service of athletes, proving that a brilliant mind can excel in several fields.
“He had a terrific shooting touch and an efficiency like no one else”, recalls Adjé Silas Metch, Ivorian sports minister, speaking of “the Magician”. The nickname sums up a man who has always known how to turn challenges into victories.
Even today, as FIBA's Regional Director for Africa, Bilé continues to serve the game with undiminished enthusiasm. His last dream: to see the Abidjan World Academy become a breeding ground of talent for African basketball.
A legacy for future generations
His induction into the FIBA Hall of Fame 2025 is much more than a personal honour: it is recognition of his immense contribution to African sport. On 17 May, in Bahrain, at the induction ceremony, a whole continent will applaud the man who shaped the history of Ivorian basketball.
Alphonse Bilé is a living legend. From player to strategist, from builder to visionary, he left an indelible mark on every stage of his career. And as his name enters the pantheon of world basketball, his legacy will continue to inspire for generations.
