The 2025 NFL Draft once again shone a spotlight on talent from all corners of the globe. This year, two African players stood out in particular: Armand Membou, taken 7th overall by the Atlanta Falcons, and Ahmed Hassanein, picked 196th overall (6th round) by the Detroit Lions. Both athletes, whose journeys are marked by a strong connection to the African continent, represent much more than personal success: they embody the future of American football in Africa.

Armand Membou: the rise of a Cameroonian talent

Originally from Cameroon, Armand Membou became the first African player selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. At 22, the Missouri offensive tackle impressed scouts with his size, his power and his ability to protect his quarterback. His is the story of a relentless worker: he arrived in the United States aged 18 to pursue his college career, and quickly made a name for himself in the NCAA with the Missouri Tigers. Being picked 7th overall by the Atlanta Falcons makes him a player to watch closely in the coming season.

Beyond his performances on the field, Membou's story is a symbol of Africa's potential in American sport. The NFL Africa Program and initiatives such as the International Player Pathway have consistently promoted the growth of American football on the continent, and his journey is a fine illustration of that.

Ahmed Hassanein: a first for Egypt

Meanwhile, Ahmed Hassanein, a Boise State defensive end, is another important face of the 2025 Draft. Born in the United States but raised in Egypt, Hassanein made history by becoming the first player of Egyptian origin to be drafted into the NFL. His selection 196th overall by the Detroit Lions rewards years of hard work and unwavering determination.

His path is a perfect example of the growing impact of the International Player Pathway (IPP), an NFL programme that allows foreign players to get noticed and join the league. The IPP has helped bring in talents like Hassanein, whose African roots add to the diversity already present in the league. It shows that the NFL is increasingly open to players from regions less traditionally associated with American football, such as the Middle East and Africa.

Africa on the rise in the NFL

With almost 200 players from the African continent currently in the league, Africa is taking up an ever more important place in the world of American football. Talents like Membou and Hassanein bear witness to this rise, backed by programmes such as the NFL Africa Program, which aims to identify and develop quality athletes on the continent.

The programme has enabled young talents to take part in training camps and scouting events in Africa, while giving them opportunities to join NFL teams. It is not limited to the United States, but extends to several African countries where passion for American football is constantly growing.

All in all, the success of Armand Membou and Ahmed Hassanein at the 2025 Draft is only the beginning of an African revolution in the NFL. The growth of American football in Africa looks promising, and with the backing of NFL programmes, more and more young African athletes are being given the chance to live the American dream. Future drafts could well hold even more surprises and talent coming straight from the heart of Africa.
