Jackson punishes City, Ndiaye leads the response

The opening goal came from a costly mistake as City tried to play out. Marc Guéhi’s loose touch allowed John McGinn to release Jackson. The Senegal striker completed the move, giving Villa an early lead and forcing the visitors to chase a side that retained a threat on the break.

Iliman Ndiaye helped City recover their attacking rhythm. Zion Suzuki stopped one effort from the Senegal international, while another struck the post. Rayan Cherki also found the goalkeeper in his way. Villa’s half-time lead therefore reflected decisive interventions rather than an absence of pressure.

City’s changes at the interval were followed by an equaliser. A short free-kick brought Ndiaye into the move and his cross found Haaland, who headed home. Eight minutes later Villa were back in front. Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye supplied Jackson and the striker’s first-time finish beat Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goalkeeper could have done more to stop the winning shot.

The numbers: pressure and a decisive contrast in goal

City had 63.8% possession, 15 shots and seven attempts on target. Villa recorded 36.2%, eight shots and two on target. The visitors also led the corner count, seven to four. Suzuki made six saves; Donnarumma made none. Villa converted both of their shots on target, while City faced a much more effective last line of defence.

SNA analysis: possession still needs protection

Calling this simply an unlucky defeat would overlook the danger attached to City’s turnovers. Their attacking output gave them opportunities to score more, but two defensive sequences proved costly. Villa accepted spells without the ball and kept Jackson available as an outlet. That approach required good goalkeeping and accurate decisions when possession changed hands. It worked here; it does not mean every spell spent defending amounted to control.

For City, the lesson concerns both penalty areas. Creating chances is only one part of the task. Protecting the team when attacks break down and dealing with the opponent’s limited opportunities remain essential, especially when facing forwards who can decide a match with few touches.

Player of the match: Nicolas Jackson, SNA’s choice

Jackson’s two finishes settled the contest. He capitalised on his team-mates’ recovery for the opener, then reached the right area to complete the move involving Mbaye. Suzuki belongs among the standout performers too. On City’s side, Ndiaye combined a threat of his own with the assist for Haaland.

The low points were defensive: Guéhi’s involvement in the first goal and Donnarumma’s failure to keep out the winner. These assessments concern specific match actions, rather than reducing either player’s overall quality to one mistake.

Villa secure their first home league win of the campaign. City leave with their perfect record broken and a clear reminder that territorial dominance cannot compensate for every lapse.
