Refurbishment work on the Stade de l'Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou in Kouhounou, Cotonou, Benin, is progressing well despite a few challenges, such as the completion timeframe. "The stadium is under construction. We are bringing it up to standard in line with the requirements of football's continental and international governing bodies. It won't be finished by March 2025. When we announced the works, I told you it would take a minimum of 5 months for one phase of the works. After that, there will be another phase, because we have to meet all the requirements, including the glass partition that separates the stands from the pitch. But if it takes us 8 months or 1 year, we will take the time needed to do it properly. Since we have made the resources available, it has to be done right," said Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, spokesman for the Beninese government.

Those involved are currently putting in a lot of effort to finish the work as soon as possible. The Sport News Africa team was able to see that the laying of the main pitch and other major works appear to be nearing completion.

The iconic home of Benin's Cheetahs, in its transformation, will see the changing rooms revamped and brought up to date with modern showers. The electrical work will also be redone to provide excellent lighting for both the main pitch and the training pitch.

The press, for their part, will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities when the stadium opens, with stands equipped with wifi and a conference room that meets international standards. The renovation of the Stade de l'Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou will also include improved sound systems throughout the stadium and around the pitch.

Security will be tightened with turnstiles at the various entrances, and several types of surveillance cameras will be installed inside and outside the ground. New giant screens will also be put in place to show matches.

Once the major works are done, only finishing and beautification work will remain, along with several ancillary structures outside or around the facility, namely nurses' stations, toilet blocks, guard booths and ticket offices.
