The Fighters had made a winning start to the 2023 Basketball Africa League against AS Douanes. On Tuesday 14 March 2023, in their second outing at the Dakar Arena, ABC fell to Rwanda Energy Group (REG). The Fighters started well, winning the first two quarters, with Stéphane Konaté shooting superbly from three-point range (4 out of 5). But from the third quarter, the Ivorians' fragile defence allowed the Rwandans to pull away. REG ultimately won by 80 to 73. The defeat prompted a reaction from Konaté. "We did not follow the coach's instructions (Liz Mills, editor's note). It is entirely our fault, but we will bounce back very quickly," he promised.
