Bayern Munich beat Leipzig 6-1 at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, October 17, on Bundesliga matchday six. Luis Díaz scored a hat-trick and set up Aleksandar Pavlović, while Michael Olise and Harry Kane also found the net. The explanation goes beyond the forwards’ finishing: Bayern repeatedly turned regains into chances against opponents who could not establish any stability in possession.

Leipzig lose control before half-time

The opening goal illustrated the precision missing from the visitors’ performance. Joshua Kimmich released Díaz, who scored in the 12th minute. Bayern kept threatening, with Dayot Upamecano and Ismael Saibari among those testing Maarten Vandevoordt. The goalkeeper made several saves, but he could not repair every mistake in front of him.

Díaz became the provider when Pavlović made it 2-0 in the 26th minute. Olise added the third in the 34th with a shot from the edge of the box after another Leipzig turnover. By then, this was about more than a lost individual duel or an exceptional finish. Leipzig were giving possession away in situations that allowed Bayern to attack immediately.

29 shots, 17 on target: dominance with substance

Bayern–Leipzig: possession 61.7%–38.3%; shots 29–12; shots on target 17–4; corners 11–3. The shots-on-target comparison is particularly revealing. Bayern regularly forced the opposing goalkeeper to act, while Leipzig put only a third of their twelve attempts on target. Those totals do not measure the precise quality of every chance, but they show how often Bayern translated pressure into a threat on goal.

Leipzig therefore suffered more than an opponent’s unusually accurate finishing. Their passing did not move the danger away for long, and their turnovers supplied further attacks. Martín Demichelis’s team must address that collective problem. Making the goalkeeper the chief culprit for such a heavy score would misrepresent his saves and the volume of chances conceded.

Díaz and Olise keep the attacks coming

The interval did not reverse the pattern. Díaz made it 4-0 in the 47th minute, before Nathaniel Brown squared for Kane to score Bayern’s fifth in the 53rd. Bayern then made four changes around the hour, including the withdrawals of Kane and Saibari. Their advantage allowed them to manage minutes well before the closing stages.

Díaz stayed on and completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute from an Olise pass. The Frenchman also hit the post before half-time and the bar after the break. His contribution should be assessed through his creativity and repeated threats as well as his goal. Treating him as merely a supporting player behind the hat-trick would overlook an important part of the performance.

Saibari involved, but Bayern still concede

Starting behind Kane, Morocco’s Ismael Saibari took part in Bayern’s dominant opening hour and tested Vandevoordt. He did not score, but he helped create opportunities during the opening hour. Bayern’s strength was that several players, operating in different areas, offered solutions rather than leaving everything to their centre-forward.

Andrija Maksimović pulled one back in added time. It did not alter the balance of the contest, but Bayern can regret failing to finish with a clean sheet. Allowing another scoring opportunity after building such a lead remains something to correct. This was a convincing response in one match, rather than proof that every Bayern weakness has disappeared.

The coaching: managing minutes after taking control

Vincent Kompany replaced Laimer, Pavlović, Saibari and Kane with Stanišić, Bischof, Gnabry and Karl around the 59th minute. At 5-0, the four changes redistributed minutes while leaving Díaz and Olise on to drive further attacks. The sixth goal came after that rotation. It would be excessive to credit the result to the substitutions: the lead had already been established. Their value was in keeping a threatening side on the pitch while reducing the workload of several starters.

SNA player of the match: Luis Díaz

Our choice is Luis Díaz. Three goals, the assist for Pavlović and involvement in the move leading to Kane’s finish made his influence broader than finishing alone. Olise and Kimmich offered strong alternatives, but Díaz combined creation and scoring at several stages of the match.

Bayern move provisionally top, with Freiburg still to play, and will host Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday. Leipzig’s priority goes beyond their next opponents: they need a safer way to play out and a collective response when their first attempts to escape pressure fail. Conceding six demands that examination.

Tops and flops

Top · Luis Díaz. A hat-trick, the assist for Pavlović and involvement in the build-up to Kane’s goal: he both created and finished.

Top · Michael Olise. A goal, the assist for Díaz’s third, a shot against the post and another against the bar. His influence went beyond the scoresheet.

Top · Joshua Kimmich. His pass unlocked the defence for the opener. That precision gave Bayern a tangible starting point from which to build their advantage.

Flop · Leipzig’s attempts to play out. Turnovers offered too many opportunities for Bayern to attack again. The third goal, in particular, punished another loss of possession.

Flop · Leipzig’s response after the break. Already 3-0 down, Leipzig conceded again in the 47th and 53rd minutes. The restart did not bring the stability they needed.

Flop · Bayern’s defensive finish. Maksimović’s added-time goal denied Urbig a clean sheet. This is a limited criticism of the closing stages, not an attempt to equate the two defences.
