Barcelona beat Real Betis 5-2 at La Cartuja on Saturday, October 17, in LaLiga matchday nine. Nine wins from nine and 27 points make a perfect record. Their defending was less convincing. Before Facundo Bernal’s dismissal reduced Betis to ten men, the hosts had pulled the score back to 2-3 and threatened enough to make the final margin worth examining.

The numbers: dominance with an important qualification
Betis–Barcelona: possession 30.7%–69.3%; shots 6–18; shots on target 5–10; corners 2–5. Barcelona produced three times as many attempts and twice as many shots on target. Five different scorers show that the win involved more than one outstanding moment from their star winger.
Those totals cover the whole match, including a substantial part of the second half played against ten men. They cannot establish that Barcelona had already shut Betis down when the sides were at full strength. Five shots on target from limited possession also show that the hosts turned their relatively few attacking spells into genuine threats.
Yamal opens it up, corners keep it unsettled
Lamine Yamal broke the deadlock with a curling left-footed shot from outside the area. His threat is not confined to beating an opponent: he can score before his teammates have fully dismantled a defensive block. The opening goal gave Barcelona an advantage without giving them control of every phase that followed.
Valentín Gómez equalised from a corner that Barcelona failed to defend effectively. Rodri then headed in Fermín López’s corner at the other end to restore the visitors’ lead. Both teams conceded from set pieces despite their ability to play with the ball. Passing quality did not make up for the failure to protect their own goal.
Abde exposes a problem Barcelona must address
Morocco international Abde Ezzalzouli gave Betis an outlet into space. His bursts down the left put Jules Koundé under pressure, and one of his moves created a chance for Héctor Bellerín that Joan García saved. The goalkeeper’s intervention mattered while the outcome was still uncertain.
After Gabriel Jesus scored from a Yamal pass, Abde reduced the deficit by attacking the space behind the defence. That is the uncomfortable point for Hansi Flick: Barcelona had far more of the ball but still allowed an opposing forward into dangerous positions. A player of Koundé’s standing must be assessed on how he limits those attacks as well as how he contributes in possession.
Bernal’s dismissal changes the conditions
Bernal received a straight red card after a confrontation with Yamal, who was booked. The dismissal came just after Betis had made it 2-3 and sharply reduced their capacity to respond. With ten players, making attacking runs while protecting the penalty area became much harder. Eric García and then Olmo extended Barcelona’s lead.
A Giovani Lo Celso goal was also disallowed following a VAR intervention for a Cucho Hernández handball in the build-up. Those decisions belong in the account of the match. They neither erase Barcelona’s valid goals nor prove that a different result was otherwise guaranteed. Bernal’s reaction was costly for his team; Yamal also needs to avoid being drawn into confrontations of that kind.
The coaching: substitutes provide more goals
Flick brought on Eric García at half-time and introduced Olmo in the second half. Both scored, with Pau Cubarsí supplying the final pass on each occasion. Barcelona’s substitutes added finishing power at a stage when their team also had an extra player.
Those contributions were effective. They do not resolve the earlier problems at corners or behind the defensive line. Barcelona’s next challenge is to preserve their attacking production while conceding fewer opportunities when possession changes hands.
SNA player of the match: Lamine Yamal
Yamal is our choice. His goal established the lead, his pass to Gabriel Jesus opened another gap after the interval and his free-kick preceded Cubarsí’s delivery for Eric García. He influenced several phases in which the result still needed shaping, rather than merely adding to a settled victory.
His booking remains a legitimate criticism. An excellent performance does not make every decision a good one. Abde’s goal and Joan García’s saves help explain why the 5-2 should not be described as a risk-free win.
Three tops and three flops
Top — Lamine Yamal. A goal, an assist and involvement in the fourth goal make him Barcelona’s main source of decisive attacking moments.
Top — Pau Cubarsí. His final passes for Eric García and Olmo broadened the range of players capable of creating and finishing attacks.
Top — Abde Ezzalzouli. A goal and runs that exposed Barcelona’s right side and the space behind their defence. The team result should not obscure his contribution.
Flop — Facundo Bernal. His dismissal left Betis short of a player just as they had renewed their chance of finding an equaliser. The reaction directly harmed his teammates.
Flop — Barcelona’s defending at the equalising corner. Gómez’s goal punished a poorly protected situation after the visitors had taken the lead.
Flop — Defensive control on Koundé’s side. Abde’s runs and Bellerín’s chance revealed difficulties. The Frenchman was not solely responsible, but his reputation should not shield that part of the performance from criticism.
