Sport News Africa: Nazareth Mbaya, how does it feel to be crowned a boxing champion at just 16 years old?

Nazareth Mbaya : I'm really happy because I love boxing so much. It encourages me to keep practising this sport and, above all, to succeed.

How did you discover boxing, and how old were you when you started?

I started boxing around 13. It was so interesting to watch people fight on TV with so much intelligence and skill, and I wanted to become like them.

What have been the toughest challenges you've had to overcome in your young career?

The biggest challenge is always the desire to improve and do better than before. When I'm preparing for a fight, I work very, very hard.

Are there any boxers or athletes who particularly inspire you?

Yes, Martin Bakole inspires me a lot, first of all because he is Congolese. He is strong, he fights in big bouts and I'd like to be like him one day. Also because he has always wanted to represent the DRC.

What are your training routines to stay at the top of your game?

I do a lot of boxing technique work, and every weekend I go to the gym and work on my body to become stronger, faster and more flexible.

How do you prepare mentally for a fight? Do you have any specific techniques for handling stress?

Before every fight I pray. God gives me the strength to fight. I pray and ask God to be with me during the fight and to give me the courage to beat my opponent.

After winning the London title, you were unable to follow it up with the English title. How do you feel after that defeat in the semi-final of the national championships?

I feel fine. I know I'll do better next time.

What are your plans for your future career?

I'd like to become a great boxer, have a professional career, become a world champion and help young people in the DRC, especially those who play sport.

What advice would you give to young people who want to start boxing or another sport?

To train very hard and always listen to their coaches, because they know what's best for them.

Have you ever been to the DRC?

No. Maybe next year.

Would you like to represent the DRC one day in major competitions?

Yes, of course!
