From theory to practice. On 6 January, the Confederation of African Football and Canal+ International, under the Canal+ University initiative, took a step forward in training young African talents in sports journalism, signing a partnership to develop training programmes for young Africans aspiring to a career in sports journalism.
The partnership is now set to take shape this April, with the launch of the Young Reporters workshop, held on the sidelines of the African Schools Football Championship, which takes place in Accra, Ghana, from 21 to 26 April 2025.

A unique opportunity for young African journalists
The programme is aimed at under-25s who are passionate about journalism and want to turn professional in African football. During the workshop, participants will benefit from exclusive masterclasses led by Charles Mbuya, a leading journalist at the Canal+ group and presenter of flagship programmes including Talents d'Afrique and Les Grandes Bouches. They will also have the chance to put their skills into practice on the ground at the continental final of the African Schools Football Championship.
Interested candidates must submit: a cover letter explaining their passion for sports journalism, a CV, and an article, audio clip or video showcasing their work
A programme that is part of a broader drive
The Young Reporters workshop is not an isolated initiative. Since its creation in 2022, it has been one of the key development programmes of the African Schools Football Championship. "Personally, it's something I would have loved to have when I was a young aspiring journalist. Not to be trained in broadcasting, but simply to have the chance to talk to journalists who inspired me. That's why I got involved in this project straight away, telling myself that what I didn't have, I can pass on to others ", said Charles Mbuya.
CAF is running other initiatives alongside it, aimed at strengthening the skills of those working in African football:
Coach education for the CAF D Licence
CAF Safeguarding Workshops
Safety and Security Workshops
Young Doctors Programme
Young Referees Programme
By launching this programme, CAF and CANAL+ University are offering African talents a genuine springboard, giving them the tools they need to become the future voices of African football.
*Applications must be sent to youngreporter@cafonline.com by the closing date of 4 April 2025.
