The response was swift. After news leaked of the emergency meeting held by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football on Tuesday 30 July, the pan-African body has broken its silence. In a statement, it announces the opening of an investigation led by its Audit and Governance Commission following "allegations of breaches of its internal governance and audit regulations within the CAF secretariat."
The announcement came after the emergence of a report submitted to members of the body. The document, which is said to be well substantiated, reportedly implicates CAF general secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba, who is allegedly accused of financial offences. According to some journalists at the heart of the revelations about the report, the general secretary is even alleged to have tried to cover up the affair to stop the report coming out.

"At CAF, there is zero tolerance for corruption or for breaches of internal governance rules, audit and transparency rules, or for breaches of the statutes and regulations of CAF and FIFA. We have committed to bringing CAF into line with the best global practices in audit governance, transparency and ethics", said CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
In light of this situation, and to get to the bottom of the affair, the Audit and Governance Committee, chaired by Judge Petrus Damaseb, "will appoint one of the most respected international law firms or an internationally renowned audit and professional services firm to investigate the alleged breach of CAF's internal audit and governance regulations and then submit a report to the CAF Executive Committee", CAF announced.
