The announcement came out of the blue on Friday 7 April 2023. Visiting Dimbokro for the laying of the foundation stone of the town's Agora, Sports Minister Danho Paulin paid tribute to a number of political and sporting figures. He announced that the Yamoussoukro Stadium will be named after Charles Konan Banny, the former prime minister and a son of the Ivorian political capital. In addition, the San Pedro Stadium will be renamed Stade Laurent Pokou, after the greatest Ivorian footballer of all time. The one in Korhogo will bear the name of Amadou Gon Coulibaly, also a former Ivorian prime minister.
"The Yamoussoukro Stadium will carry the name of Charles Konan Banny. The one in San-Pedro will carry that of Laurent Pokou. The Korhogo Stadium will be named Stade Gon Coulibaly," the Sports Minister promised. A fine posthumous tribute to these distinguished figures.
