Atlético Madrid in the stronger position
The Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid hosts the clash between Atlético Madrid and Manchester United on Tuesday. Beaten in their opener away to Liverpool (2-1), the Colchoneros want to get their campaign back on track against an English side who, for their part, made a perfect start to their European campaign with a big win (4-0) over Sabah Football Club.
Despite sitting 25th in the provisional league phase table, Atlético Madrid go into this game with solid credentials. Since their Champions League defeat, the Madrid club have rediscovered their form in La Liga. Before the international break, Diego Simeone's side won three in a row: 3-0 away to Real Sociedad, 4-0 against Osasuna and 2-1 against Real Madrid. After the break, they confirmed that momentum with a 2-1 win away to Alavés.
With eleven goals scored and only two conceded over that run, Atlético boast an attacking efficiency and defensive solidity that could tip the balance against Manchester United.
Manchester United struggling
By contrast, Manchester United are struggling to build on their opening win in the Champions League. Despite sitting fourth in the competition's table, the English club are going through a difficult spell domestically.
Michael Carrick's side first lost the derby to Manchester City (1-0), before going out of the League Cup against Brighton (3-2). They then drew with Fulham (1-1), and again with Tottenham (1-1) at Old Trafford, in their last outing before the trip to Madrid.
The contrast is also stark in their domestic standings: Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League, while Atlético Madrid are second in La Liga. The Mancunians will therefore need to rediscover some consistency if they are to upset an in-form Madrid side.
Historical edge to Atlético
The head-to-head record also favours the Spanish club. In six official meetings in all competitions, Atlético Madrid have won three, against one for Manchester United, while the two sides have drawn twice. The goal tally is also in Madrid's favour, with eight goals to four.
Their most recent meeting came in the last 16 of the 2021-2022 Champions League. After a 1-1 draw in Madrid, Atlético won 1-0 at Old Trafford to book their place in the next round.
Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain: a heavyweight clash
On Wednesday, the Etihad Stadium stages another eagerly awaited fixture as Manchester City host Paris Saint-Germain. Both teams made a successful start to the competition and sit in the top 8 of the provisional league phase table.
Manchester City won away at Porto (2-0), while PSG recorded a comfortable victory over Slovan Bratislava (6-1), a result that took them to the top of the provisional table.
Premier League leaders with six wins in six matches, Manchester City are coming off a convincing victory over Liverpool (3-0). Enzo Maresca's side, still unbeaten in all competitions this season, will want to extend their good run in front of their own fans.
Opposite them, Paris Saint-Germain aim to confirm their excellent start in Europe. After their attacking display against Slovan Bratislava, the Parisians will look to maintain the same level of performance, despite a less consistent domestic campaign, in which they have eleven points out of a possible eighteen after six matches.
Given the form of both teams, this tie looks particularly hard to call. The quality of the squads and the European ambitions of both clubs point to a closely fought contest.
Manchester City ahead in the head-to-head
The Champions League head-to-head record favours Manchester City. In seven meetings, the English club have four wins, against two for Paris Saint-Germain, with one draw. The goal tally also favours the Citizens, with eleven goals to the Parisians' ten.
Their most recent official meeting came on matchday seven of the 2024-2025 league phase. PSG won at home (4-2) and went on to win their first title in the competition.
This second matchday therefore offers two distinct storylines: Atlético Madrid and Manchester United will look to gain the upper hand in a meeting of two teams on opposite trajectories, while Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain will try to confirm their good European starts in a clash between two contenders for the top places.
