Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Rogers, Palmer and Martínez red card sink Carrick

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 on Saturday 31 October 2026 at Stamford Bridge in London, in Premier League matchday 9. Morgan Rogers in the 50th minute and Cole Palmer from the penalty spot in the 64th turned around a game the visitors, reduced to ten men after Lisandro Martínez's sending-off, had started better.

In the 34th minute, Matheus Cunha thinks he has given Manchester United the lead. The ball comes from a corner, Harry Maguire flicks it on with his head, and VAR flags the Brazilian offside. The moment sums up the visitors' first half: danger, clear chances and 0-0 at the break.

Bruno Fernandes, back in the starting line-up after being left out against Bournemouth, gets the best chance from a Bryan Mbeumo through ball and sends it over the bar. Amad Diallo twice capitalises on Wesley Fofana's mistakes, is denied once by Mike Penders, then shoots too high. Levi Colwill also has to make a covering block in front of Cunha.

Everything turns after the restart. In the 50th minute, Romeo Lavia steals the ball in front of Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba, Morgan Rogers drives up the middle unchallenged and finishes with a lob. Nine minutes later, Lisandro Martínez is booked for a foul on the scorer. From a corner, he then raises an arm on Fofana. After a VAR check, Peter Bankes shows him a second yellow in the 63rd minute and awards the penalty that Cole Palmer converts in the 64th.

The closing stages do not change the result. Estêvão has a goal disallowed for offside in the 71st minute, and Senne Lammens then keeps out his shot. In added time, Penders turns a Mbeumo volley onto the bar.

Nineteen shots on one side, twenty fouls on the other

Chelsea finish with 19 shots to 12, including 10 on target to 5, and 2.71 expected goals to 1.19. Lammens makes 8 saves, Penders 3. These totals cover the whole match, penalty included, and more than half an hour of eleven against ten. They therefore do not describe the balance of power before the break, which match reports tend to put in United's favour.

The most telling column is discipline: 20 fouls for United against 8 for Chelsea, four other players booked and one sent off, against a single yellow, shown at 90+3 to Penders for time-wasting. With 59% possession and 561 passes to 396, the Londoners managed the end of the game with the ball, without dominating corners: 8 against 7.

A solo lob, a landmark penalty

50th minute, Morgan Rogers, from a Lavia recovery: starting in the centre-circle area, he cuts through a retreating defence and lobs Lammens.

64th minute, Cole Palmer from the penalty spot: Lammens gets a touch but cannot keep it out. Palmer thus scores his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, in his 105th game. Only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (84 games) and Diego Costa (85) reached that mark faster at the club.

United lost this game twice

The turning point comes in fourteen minutes, from the 50th to the 64th. Before it, United created enough to lead, and Carrick said so again after the match, arguing that his team should have been ahead at the break. After it, the visitors conceded a goal from a midfield turnover, then went down to ten men and gave away a penalty with the same movement.

Our reading: the first defeat was settled in front of Penders' goal, the second in self-control. Xabi Alonso explained that he asked his players at half-time to keep the ball, and he acknowledged that the context turned in his team's favour at 2-0 with an extra man. Chelsea therefore did not dominate this game for 90 minutes. They took advantage of an opponent who opened the door for them, and kept a clean sheet at home in the league for the first time since January, 13 games.

Carrick did not blame Martínez, saying he did not feel let down by the red card. The run, meanwhile, grows longer: nine games without a win in all competitions, three draws and six defeats.

Carrick tweaks, Alonso shuts up shop

Carrick makes the first move: Kobbie Mainoo replaces Baleba in the 58th minute, even before the sending-off. In the 66th, three minutes after the red card, Ayden Heaven comes on for Andrey Santos and Mason Mount takes Cunha's place. Joshua Zirkzee replaces Diallo in the 77th. Mainoo (70th) and Zirkzee (86th) are each booked.

Alonso waits until the 74th minute to send on Pep Chavarría for Marco Palestra, then brings on Danny Welbeck, Valentín Barco and Malo Gusto all at once in the 87th. Palmer goes off at 90+7 for Geovany Quenda. None of these substitutions affected the score.

Mbeumo, Diallo and Baleba: danger without reward

Three African internationals started, all on the United side. Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon) played the whole match: two key passes, including the through ball for Fernandes, and that volley onto the bar at the end of added time. He was also close to the ball won by Lavia for the first goal and was booked in the 81st minute for failing to retreat. SNA rating: 6.5.

Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast) was the liveliest until he went off in the 77th minute: 4 shots, 2 on target, 2 successful dribbles out of 2, but his two big first-half chances came to nothing. SNA rating: 6.5. Carlos Baleba (Cameroon) struggled more against Lavia and Moisés Caicedo: 2 duels won out of 7 before his substitution in the 58th minute, after being beaten by Lavia in the build-up to the first goal. SNA rating: 5.5.

Chelsea up to fourth, United level with the drop zone

Chelsea move up to fourth with 16 points, eight behind leaders Arsenal on 24 points. Manchester United stay 17th with 7 points and a goal difference of -5, level on points with Crystal Palace, who occupy the first relegation place.

Carrick insisted he would be on the bench on Tuesday for the Champions League home game against Roma. In the Premier League, United host Aston Villa on Sunday 8 November, the day Chelsea travel to Sunderland.

SNA man of the match: Morgan Rogers

Morgan Rogers had only one shot, and that shot changed the match. His run in the 50th minute, finished with a lob, opened the scoring, and a foul on him earned Martínez the first yellow card nine minutes later. He finishes with 8 duels won out of 13, 3 key passes and a single shot, on target and decisive. SNA rating: 8.5.
