Rivers United took the initiative in this first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final against USM Alger. The Nigerian club won 1-0 against USMA thanks to a goal from Augustine Okejepha. The 19-year-old midfielder made his mark early in the match (10th minute), underlining his side's dominance. The Nigerians failed to add a second goal but still secured a precious win ahead of the return leg on 7 April.
In the other match to produce a winner, Stade Malien lost at home to Dreams FC (1-2). The Malians had taken the lead through a goal from Yoro Mamadou Diaby (53rd minute). They were pegged back 13 minutes later (66th) before cracking in the 73rd minute. John Antwi, who scored twice, helped the Ghanaians land a big away result. Stade Malien also lost their goalscoring defender, Yoro Mamadou Diaby, who was sent off late in the match (90+1).
Zamalek, meanwhile, snatched an important away win against Modern Futur (1-2). After conceding in the 35th minute, the Egyptian club levelled before the break (45+5). Tunisia international Hamza Mathlouthi got his side back on track. He was followed by Ahmed Sayed "Zico" late on (88th minute). Introduced as a substitute, the Egyptian winger converted a penalty to seal his team's victory.
Abu Salem and RSB Berkane, by contrast, cancelled each other out (0-0). It was the only goalless draw of these Confederation Cup quarter-final first legs. RSB played a good part of the match with ten men. Hamza El Moussaoui, the Moroccan left-back, was sent off in the 57th minute. The Moroccans will have to get the job done in the return leg next week.
