Young athletes at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, the first Olympic event held in Africa

A global gathering in the heart of Africa

Dakar is about to become the focus of the international sporting world. After several editions staged on other continents, the Youth Olympic Games are coming to Africa for the first time. The recognition fulfils the promise made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2018 to entrust the continent with hosting the event.

A total of 2,665 athletes aged 14 to 17 are expected for this edition, competing in 25 disciplines across 153 medal events. Competition will take place at eight venues spread across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The programme includes athletics, swimming, basketball, rugby sevens, skateboarding, beach wrestling, fencing and breaking.

Senegal will also be represented by a delegation of 136 athletes, hoping to use the international exposure to fly the flag in front of their home crowd.

Youth at the centre of a continental symbol

Beyond the medals, Dakar 2026 is a showcase for Africa's sporting and cultural potential. By welcoming delegations from around the world, Senegal also intends to present a different image of the continent, one driven by its youth, its hospitality and its diversity.

IOC president Kirsty Coventry, a former Zimbabwean swimmer, sees the event as an important opportunity to bring the Olympic movement closer to Africa. More than 6,000 Senegalese volunteers have been mobilised to help with the running of the event.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for Saturday evening in Diamniadio, will officially kick off the big sporting celebration. For nearly two weeks, the young talents will have the chance to compete against each other, but also to share an experience that goes beyond borders and nationalities.

A first step towards bigger ambitions

This Olympic first could also open up new prospects for the continent. Hosting the YOG is a valuable experience in infrastructure, logistics and the management of major international sports events.

Africa's ambitions do not stop at Dakar. South Africa is among the potential candidates to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, hoping to become the first African country to stage the global showpiece.

For now, Senegal has a date with history. With Dakar 2026, Africa is no longer content simply to be represented at the Olympic arenas: it is also becoming the host. A first that could have a lasting impact on the evolution of the Olympic movement on the continent.
