The football world is still in shock following the announcement of Aaron Boupendza's death. The Gabon international died on Wednesday 16 April in Hangzhou, China, aged 28. Having played for numerous clubs in Europe, Turkey, Qatar and China, the Moanda native fell from the 11th floor of the building where he lived. His death has raised questions and sent a deep shockwave through football.
A fatal fall, with police confirming the suicide theory
In an official statement released on Thursday, Hangzhou district police put an end to speculation. The investigation, wrapped up within a few hours, concluded it was a tragic accident and ruled out any criminal involvement. The Panther is therefore said to have taken his own life. "It has been verified that the deceased, Aaron Boupendza, a 28-year-old male citizen of the Republic of Gabon, is a foreign player at Zhejiang Professional Football Club", the statement said.

The striker died after falling from the balcony of an 11th-floor flat in a residential building where he lived in the Chinese city. According to the authorities, the emergency call was made at 13:14. Despite swift medical attention and an attempt to save him at hospital, the Gabon international did not survive. Security forces ruled out a criminal act after examining the scene, witness statements and CCTV footage.
Mario Lemina's heartfelt outburst
Boupendza's sudden death has deeply affected his former team-mates, starting with Mario Lemina. The Wolves midfielder expressed his pain on Instagram, in a message as heartbreaking as it was cryptic. "Rest in peace, Aaron! So talented and so cheerful. Allah is great and knows your heart", he wrote, before lashing out: "My anger is immense today. These same people, who called themselves brothers, friends or whatever and who advised you to go in this direction… I hope they will go and sincerely ask your parents for forgiveness."

The message has been seen as an implicit accusation against the player's entourage, or even against those who influenced his recent career choices, notably his move to China... and who may have affected him mentally to the point of pushing him to take his own life.
His team's match goes ahead, prompting bewilderment and outrage
Another source of outrage was the Chinese league's decision to keep Zhejiang FC's league match on, just hours after Aaron Boupendza's death. While supporters paid a moving tribute - chanting, holding up shirts and lighting up phone torches - the decision to play the game was widely criticised on social media.
" Football has no place in such a context", said head coach Raul Caneda, visibly shaken, at his post-match press conference. Captain Cheng Jin, in tears, cut short a television interview. Despite a club statement expressing its cooperation with the authorities and its condolences to the player's family, Zhejiang FC's image was tarnished by the decision, which many fans considered inappropriate, even disrespectful.
A national shock in Gabon
Aaron Boupendza's death leaves a huge void in the Gabon national team, for whom he won 34 caps and scored 8 goals. Having come through at CF Mounana and made his name in France and then Turkey, he represented a rising generation in African football, despite a club career that never matched his potential. Since the news of his death, the Gabonese football community and civil society have paid many tributes, right up to the head of state.
"It is with immense sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a talented centre-forward who did Gabonese football proud. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. May God bless his soul ", said Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, recently elected president.
Although the investigation is now officially closed, many questions remain about this tragedy. Beyond the facts, the brutality of his death continues to hit an entire continent hard, and the Chinese league's handling of the situation is hard to swallow.
