Three-match suspensions for Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan, five for Mostafa Zico: FIFA has sanctioned three members of the Egypt set-up after the refereeing row that followed their World Cup exit. The EFA is demanding the detailed grounds for the decisions with a view to a possible appeal.
The World Cup is over for the Pharaohs, but the fallout from their defeat by Argentina is now being played out in the disciplinary arena. The Egyptian Football Association announced on Monday 19 October that it had received the decisions of FIFA's disciplinary committee concerning head coach Hossam Hassan, team director Ibrahim Hassan and striker Mostafa Zico.
The twin brothers are each suspended for three matches. Zico receives a longer ban of five matches. The absences could weigh on Egypt's upcoming international commitments.
A row that outlives the elimination
The case stems from the round-of-sixteen defeat by Argentina (2-3) at the 2026 World Cup. After the match, Hossam Hassan strongly criticised the refereeing, saying his side had been the victim of an injustice and had been denied a place in the quarter-finals. He refused to put the exit down to a simple lack of luck.
The Egyptian delegation's protests led to disciplinary proceedings. The detailed grounds held against each of the three men have yet to be obtained, however: the EFA statement gives the length of the suspensions without setting out all the facts and legal considerations behind the decisions.
EFA prepares next move with AFCON qualifiers in sight
The federation has asked FIFA to send it the detailed reasons and grounds for the sanctions. It intends to study them to assess its legal position and prepare the appeal steps provided for in the regulations. The request is therefore a preliminary step towards an appeal, the outcome of which remains unknown.
On the pitch, the suspensions could rule Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan out of the two AFCON qualifiers against Malawi, scheduled for November, and then the first match of the March 2027 international window. For Mostafa Zico, five matches to serve could push back his return to the national team until June 2027.
For the Pharaohs, the next step will be to obtain the grounds for the decisions and clarify how the planned appeal will proceed. That will also make it easier to gauge the impact of the sanctions on preparations for the fixtures ahead.
