In Kuwait, Egypt's women sealed qualification on Thursday. Their male counterparts still needed to win the final to join them in Doha. On Friday the men let the last available place slip away, despite winning the first doubles match of the final against Australia.
Two wins enough for Egypt's women
On Thursday 29 October, the decisive tie against Tunisia was settled in two matches. Faidallah and El Halaby beat Jeribi and Hamrouni 6–3, 6–4. Tawfik and El Nimr then won against Chamli and Allani, 6–4, 6–1. With two points in the bag, Egypt had won the tie and sealed qualification.
Egypt's women thus claimed one of the two places reserved for women's teams in these Asia and Africa qualifiers. Indonesia took the other ticket by beating Japan (2–1). Both teams will join the women's draw at the World Cup, scheduled from 2 to 7 November in the Qatari capital.
Men's final turns after first doubles
Marzouk and Hossam first put Egypt ahead against Brown and Ashenden, beating them 6–4, 6–3. But Wakim and Shokeir lost the second doubles against Bechard and Melisi, despite winning the first set. The Australians prevailed 4–6, 6–4, 7–6.
The final match therefore had to separate the two countries. Benzal and Velickovic won it against Aboulkassem and El Garhy, 7–6, 7–5. Australia took the second point and the only men's place awarded in these qualifiers.
The tournament featured fourteen men's teams and thirteen women's teams. For Egypt, the outcome is therefore a split: qualification secured in two matches for the women, and a final lost in the third doubles for the men.
