Lyon and AC Milan beaten 3-0, Marseille still stuck: several big names endured a difficult night on Thursday 22 October 2026, on matchday three of the Europa League. Bournemouth continue their perfect record, while Real Sociedad ran out resounding 6-0 winners in Norway.

Same scoreline, two disappointments. At Hoffenheim and at Bournemouth alike, Lyon and Milan conceded three goals without finding a reply. For the French side, the defeat ends a successful start to the competition. For the Italians, it further weakens an already troubled campaign. And the night's setbacks did not stop at those two games.

Lyon and Milan, two heavy falls

At Hoffenheim, OL gave way at the worst possible moment. Andrej Kramarić opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, then set up Adam Daghim shortly after the restart, and Adam Hložek late on. One goal and two assists: the Croatian was involved in every one of the German side's goals.

Beaten 3-0 after wins over Anderlecht and Crystal Palace, Lyon suffer their first European defeat of the season. On six points, the club slip to twelfth and drop out of the top 8, which earns direct qualification for the knockout stage. Hoffenheim, pointless until now, have relaunched their campaign.

At Bournemouth, Milan saw the game slip away from them in the first half. Justin Kluivert converted a first penalty in the 8th minute. Mike Maignan's sending-off around the half-hour mark, followed by a second penalty converted by Marcus Tavernier, left the Rossoneri with ten men and trailing 2-0 at the break. Substitute Amine Adli sealed their night with a free kick in the 84th minute.

The contrast in the table is stark: Bournemouth make it three wins in a row and sit third with nine points. Milan, twenty-fourth with three points, find themselves in the last position that opens the way to the play-offs.

Marseille sink deeper, Leverkusen move on

Marseille did not suffer such a heavy beating, but their defeat at Graz (1-0) worsens an already worrying situation. After Beşiktaş and Olympiacos, Sturm inflict a third defeat in three rounds on the French side. OM remain without a point and lie thirty-fourth.

Bayer Leverkusen are on the opposite trajectory. Winners 2-0 away to OFI Crete, the German club have nine points and are second. While some favourites are still searching for their balance, Leverkusen have already racked up three wins.

Real Sociedad and Union Saint-Gilloise strike hard

The attacking showpiece of the night belonged to Real Sociedad, 6-0 winners at Lillestrøm. The Spaniards thus claim their first win of the league phase, after a defeat by Bournemouth and a draw against Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Belgian club also boosted their goal difference by beating Hapoel Beer-Sheva 4-0. AZ Alkmaar won by the same score away to Ararat-Armenia. Finally, NEC Nijmegen pulled off a fine result in Zagreb, beating Dinamo 4-2.

After three rounds, the gaps are starting to count, without definitively condemning the struggling sides: each still has five games to play. On 5 November, Lyon will try to bounce back away to Real Sociedad, Milan will host Ferencváros and Marseille will travel to Leverkusen. Three fixtures to answer a night that has seriously dented their ambitions.
