Chelsea needed a win and a defence capable of seeing out a game without conceding. Both boxes were ticked at Everton: a 2–0 success on Saturday, 17 October, thanks to Pedro Neto, who scored straight after the break and again in the 90th minute. With 13 points after seven matchdays, the Blues are now three points clear of their opponents, who remain on 10. Everton suffer their first league defeat of the season.
A first half that calls for nuance
The final score should not erase Chelsea's early difficulties. Thierno Barry got a header in, then Jack Grealish forced Emiliano Martinez into a save from a volley. The visitors also threatened: Moises Caicedo hit the bar, while a Maxence Lacroix header was cleared off the line by Harrison Armstrong.
This succession of chances shapes our reading of the result. Chelsea eventually took control, but Everton had enough opportunities to give the game a different direction. The 0–0 at half-time was therefore not merely the product of a frustrated London attack: both defences had already been called into action.
Neto turns the game in two moments
It took only 43 seconds after the restart to break the deadlock. The move went through Morgan Rogers and Jorrel Hato, whose cross found Neto. The Portuguese finished it off. In the 90th minute, he collected the ball after a Jordan Henderson free-kick was blocked by the wall and scored his second.
Between those two strikes, Chelsea had to deal with a worrying stoppage: Martinez left on a stretcher after a collision, replaced by Mike Penders. On the pitch, the Blues nonetheless preserved their lead despite the enforced change.
The numbers: more shots, but possession without overwhelming dominance
Chelsea finish with 18 shots to 6, 7 of them on target to 5. Possession is more evenly shared: 52.8% for the visitors, 47.2% for Everton. Corners also favour the Blues, 7 to 5. The figures point to superiority in the volume of attempts, while reminding us that Everton regularly found the target.
Our assessment is therefore positive, with one clear caveat: the defensive result is better than the security shown in every phase of play. Keeping a clean sheet in the Premier League for the first time since January is an important step forward. It does not yet prove that the frailties have gone.
SNA Player of the Match: Pedro Neto
Neto is our choice for his two decisive contributions. He unlocks a game that was still open, then takes away Everton's hope of a comeback. His finishing gives concrete expression to Chelsea's attacking volume. At the other end, the first-half chances make Everton's attacking return a poor one: they had the means to score and finish on zero.
For Chelsea, the challenge will be to reproduce this efficiency while conceding fewer clear chances. The next league fixture, against Tottenham on 24 October, will show whether this win marks the start of a run or remains a bright spell.
