A shockwave has hit the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot). The body's president, former Indomitable Lions striker Samuel Eto’o, is in FIFA's sights. According to reliable sources, football's world governing body is investigating not only the contract signed by Fécafoot and a sports betting company, but also the alleged involvement of its president in match-fixing in his country.
Already weakened by all these affairs, which have been fuelled by the explosive revelations of his former 4th vice-president Henry Njalla Quan, who has resigned, the former FC Barcelona striker faces a fresh threat to his mandate. It comes from the Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon (Acfac). The organisation's executive board met in extraordinary session this Friday, 21 July 2023. The aim was to address the phone recording that has been circulating online since 18 July and which raises serious suspicions over the alleged involvement of Fécafoot president Eto'o in securing promotion to the top flight for Victoria United (Opopo).
Towards the installation of a normalisation committee?
Following the statements attributed to Eto'o in this conversation, Acfac notes with regret that Fécafoot has become an organisation serving the interests of a few individuals. Therefore, "given the extreme gravity of this situation, which has further damaged the image of Cameroonian football internationally and, by extension, the image of Cameroon itself ", the association demands the immediate resignation of the president of Fécafoot. It also calls for the immediate resignation of all members of the Fécafoot Executive Committee, whose "complicit silence" has "allowed Cameroonian football to be taken hostage by a mafia-style organisation".
The Acfac Executive Board also laments the silence of the Cameroonian government, in particular the sports minister, who "refuses to exercise his legal powers to put an end to this killing off of Cameroonian football ". Finally, the Acfac Executive Board announces that it will urgently petition the FIFA president, asking the FIFA Council to step in and install a normalisation committee at the head of Fécafoot. It should be noted that Acfac has already brought down three successive executives at Fécafoot between 2013 and 2021.
