FIFA Series 2026: Who are the new arrivals for Cameroon
The list of 26 Indomitable Lions convened by David Pagou for the FIFA Series 2026 in Australia already raises serious questions. Between the absence of major executives like André Onana and the massive arrival of new profiles such as Angle Yondjo, confined to the Lille reserve, the coach is experiencing a divisive break.

The list unveiled by the coach of Cameroon, David Pagou, for the FIFA Series 2026 in Australia did not wait for the kick-off to spark debate and questions. A few days before the confrontations against Australia and China on March 27 and 31, the Cameroonian technician opted for a group of 26 players marked by an assumed renewal, but also by significant absences. Between sports choices, political signals and bets on the future, this selection draws the current fracture lines of the Indomitable Lions lair.
Absences that question more than they convince
Among the great absentees, four names crystallize the critics. First Carlos Baleba, Nouhou Tolo and Christian Bassogog. All were still present at the last African Cup of Nations and embody a form of recent continuity. Their simultaneous eviction is therefore not a simple adjustment, but a real choice of rupture. In particular, the absence of André Onana, yet considered as the most fit Cameroonian goalkeeper on the European scene, questions the real criteria that preside over the selection.
Officially, David Pagou assumes a logic of openness and rotation. There are millions and millions of Cameroonian footballers who want to join the group. Unfortunately, there are choices that must be made (...) The door is not closed," he said. A justification that aims to be soothing, but which struggles to dispel the feeling of sometimes opaque management, especially when it is admitted behind the scenes that Onana’s non-convocation is based on extra-sporting reasons. At this level, the boundary between sports project and peripheral considerations becomes blurred.
Beyond the dismissed frameworks, it is a whole recent generation that seems to be put in parentheses. The absence of Carlos Baleba, a profile on the rise, or that of Nouhou Tolo, a regular participant in international games, sends a clear message: the hierarchy is no longer fixed. But this accelerated renewal carries an obvious risk, that of weakening an already unstable structure, in a context where the Cameroonian selection is struggling to find a coherent identity.
A wave of new faces with uncertain contours
In parallel, the coach opened the door to a wave of new faces. No less than eleven players discover the den, among them Housseini Ousmanou, Moungam Emmanuel, Stéphane Keller, Kevin Keben, Maël Monyebe, Serge Ndzomo Eloundou, Konrad Nfanseu, Saidou Moubarak, Ryan Fosso Donfack and Angel Yondjo Mata. A massive renewal that reflects a desire to expand the base, but also to test profiles still little exposed at the very high international level.
Some of these choices stem from a logic of promoting the local pool. Four players from the MTN Elite One championship – Housseini Ousmanou, Maël Monyebe, Serge Ndzomo Eloundou and Konrad Nfanseu – are thus rewarded for their domestic performances. An orientation often requested, but rarely applied with such magnitude. It remains to be seen whether this one-off exhibition will lead to a sustainable integration or whether it will be part of a policy of communication with no future.
Questions
Other summonses question on the other hand. The case of Angel Yondjo Mata, still confined to reserve teams in France, or that of Kevin Keben, losing ground at club level, illustrate a risk-taking undertaken. Through these choices, David Pagou seems to prioritize potential over immediate performance, at the risk of weakening competitiveness in the short term. A strategy that can defend itself in a phase of reconstruction, but which requires results to avoid appearing as a risky bet.
In the end, this list acts as a revealer. Behind the argument of renewal, it highlights the persistent tensions around the management of the national selection: weight of extra-sporting decisions, instability of choices, difficulty in building a readable project. In Australia, the matches against Australia and China will be a test. Not only for the new players, but for the credibility of a coach who, by wanting to reshuffle the cards, takes the risk of blurring the game even more.
