The Coppa Italia semi-final was marred by racist acts and chanting on Tuesday 4 April 2023. Targeted by the abuse, Belgium's Romelu Lukaku responded in the best possible way, scoring a late penalty (1-1) against Juventus, but the referee felt he celebrated the goal excessively and sent him off with a second yellow card. Even so, the former Chelsea striker received support from across the football world, including from FIFA and Didier Drogba.
The Ivorian, who had the Inter Milan scorer under his wing at Chelsea, spoke out to condemn yet another ugly episode involving Italian fans. "When your talent and your strength start to hurt them and you become bigger and better, their stupidity shows," said the Ivorian star, dismayed.
