Football - Ismaëlo Ganiou: From Burkina Faso to France?

RC Lens promising central defender, Ismaëlo Ganiou (20 years old) stands out as one of the revelations of the season in Ligue 1. Having made 10 appearances and 2 goals this season, the player experienced a meteoric rise after a loan in Annecy. Born to Burkinabe parents, he has dual nationality (French and Burkinabé) and honored a selection with the Stallions in June 2025 playing 28 minutes during a friendly against Zimbabwe.

Absent from the list for the AFCON 2025, following a decision by former coach Brama Traoré who had deemed him "too tender", the young Lensois, Ismaëlo Ganiou, recently expressed an ambition that is being debated in Burkina Faso: to join the France Espoirs team.

In an interview granted to Lensois.com after the 3-1 victory of Lens against Rennes on February 7, 2026, Ismaëlo Ganiou declared:

"I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground. On a personal level, I have goals, and the France Espoirs team is one of them. It’s something that attracts me. I give the maximum and hope to reach by the end of the season.”

This speech, far from being trivial, opens the door to a change of sports nationality. Having played only one friendly match that is unofficial in major FIFA competitions, Ismaëlo Ganiou remains eligible for the Bleuets de la France according to the rules in force.

Personal ambition or message to the Burkinabe Federation?
In Burkina Faso, reactions are contrasting and reflect a mix of understanding, disappointment and criticism. Roger Mitbkieta adopts a demanding tone:

'Did he want to wear the jersey of Burkina Faso or that of Brama Traoré? If it was really the jersey of Burkina that he wanted, then he would come back to wear it with all the patriotic dignity.”

“We have not been honest with him by not trusting his talent.”

Idrissou Zaba, more nuanced, points to the responsibilities of the Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF):

"He has vision. He wanted to represent Burkina Faso with dignity, but Burkina, in turn, did not want it. He is therefore free to choose where he wants to play now. That’s how we did it, and Alban Lafont changed his nationality. We need to change the way we manage binationals. I thank Brama for everything.

Salomon Nikiema sees in this situation an opportunity for a lesson:

“To something, misfortune is good. We were not honest with him by not trusting his talent. It was really during the AFCON that he progressed and established himself as an indisputable incumbent. If he had come earlier, he probably would not have had this continuity. We have today the opportunity to repair this injustice towards him, but if he chooses the France Espoirs team, wish him a great career.”

A choice that questions the patriotism of Ismaëlo Ganiou
Among the supporters of the Stallions, opinions diverge. Some see it as a salutary electroshock: «This choice is not a betrayal, but a strong message. He was minimized by the former staff and opts today for the Espoirs de France. For me, it is a way to show its real value and put pressure on the federation. He will be with us very soon.”

Others express patriotic disappointment:

"Burkina Faso needs its daughters and sons to move forward. The one who prefers another flag is his choice. The disappointment of not playing an AFCON at only 20 years old should not justify turning your back on your country. Other fights are coming for the Stallions. Better to be alone than in bad company. Good luck to him. Homeland or death, we will conquer.”

A third supporter tempers: « Very wise. This decision will contribute to a deep reflection on our football, and relevant decisions may follow from it. Sometimes, in life, the consequences can also be positive, as they allow for a better understanding of the true causes.”

In the end, the case of Ismaëlo Ganiou goes beyond the individual case. It questions the management of dual nationals by the Burkina Faso Football Federation (FBF), the selection criteria and the ability to retain talent trained abroad. If Ismaëlo Ganiou were to definitively opt for the France Espoirs, it would be a new alarm signal like Alban Lafont for a country that so much needs its nuggets to shine on the continental stage.
