Several Gabonese footballers have enjoyed significant success in their careers and earned substantial sums through their contracts, contract addenda and other commercial ventures. Gabon Eco reveals the top 5 best-paid Gabonese players for the 2023/24 season.
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, an emblematic figure of Gabonese football, tops this ranking with an annual salary of 8.4 million euros, roughly 5.46 billion CFA francs. Back in Ligue 1 this summer after a spell at Chelsea, the 34-year-old striker signed for Olympique de Marseille.
Despite the challenges, Aubameyang has shown he has lost none of his eye for goal. This season he has found the net 12 times and provided 7 assists in 24 appearances in all competitions. His experience and goalscoring instinct continue to make him a valuable asset for the Phocéens. After one season, he is leaving OM for Al-Qadsiah in a 9 million euro transfer.
- Mario Lemina (Wolves)
In second place is Mario Lemina, Wolverhampton Wanderers' defensive midfielder, who earns 2.7 million euros a year, roughly 1.76 billion CFA francs. He joined Wolves in January 2023 from OGC Nice and quickly adapted to the intensity of the Premier League.
This season he has played 17 league games in England, scoring 4 goals and bringing much-needed stability to his side. His influence on the pitch and his consistency make him a central part of Wolverhampton's set-up. His current market value is estimated at 10 million euros.
- Aaron Appindangoyé (Sivasspor)
Aaron Appindangoyé, a centre-back playing for Sivasspor in Turkey, ranks third with an annual salary of 350,000 euros, roughly 227.5 million CFA francs. At 32, he has been a pillar of the defence at the club, where his contract came to an end in June 2024. The centre-back enjoyed his best season at Sivasspor in 2023-2024, playing 31 matches and scoring one goal. With his time there over, he has joined Kocaelispor, a club in Turkey's second division. Contract length: 2 years.
