Competing in a tournament and making a game call for different skills. Announced for 26–31 October in Lagos by Africacomicade, Gamathon 2026 aims to combine both dimensions in its programme, placing competition alongside technical training and professional networking.
From workshops to studio showcases
The published schedule listed online sessions for 26–28 October, followed by technical workshops and masterclasses with Unity on 29 and 30 October. Unity is a development engine: a tool used to build games and interactive experiences. These sessions are also aimed at creators looking to turn an idea into a playable project.
For 31 October, the organiser announced an Industry Day open to the public at The Zone Tech Park in Gbagada. Exhibitions, game showcases, talks and competitions were on the programme. This public event differs from the invitation-only gatherings, including the industry dinner on 26 October and the Women in Games Workshop and Mixer on 28 October.
Understanding what happens behind the controller
A competitive player works on practice, strategy and tournament performance. Making a game also draws on programming, art, sound, level design and testing. Gamathon’s programme offers two perspectives on the African scene: the people competing in matches and the people building the games.
