George Ilenikhena failed to find the net on Sunday. Introduced in the 97th minute, deep into stoppage time, he had just enough time to see Genk pull a goal back to make it 3-2 in a win that his side Antwerp had secured inside the first half-hour by scoring three goals. The 17-year-old therefore did not add to his tally off the bench, having done so three times in the Belgian champions' last 4 matches. Those four appearances have put the Lagos-born player in the spotlight.
George Ilenikhena had in fact become, at 17 years and 74 days old, according to Opta, the youngest player to score in 2 consecutive Jupiler Pro League matches since Romelu Lukaku in 2010 (16 years and 312 days). And all that with very limited playing time. Since the start of the season, Ilenikhena has played just 114 minutes in 11 appearances.
Ilenikhena is already well acquainted with age records. He is the youngest goalscorer in Amiens' history, having been handed his Ligue 2 debut last year when he was only 16. The Picards, who then sold him in August to Antwerp for 6 million euros, when his market value was estimated at 1 million euros, predict a bright future for him.
Nigeria, where George Ilenikhena was born, is a production line of strikers. For years, Nigerian centre-forwards have been shining on European pitches, in Scandinavia or in the top 5 European leagues. Victor Boniface, for example, is this season Leverkusen's secret weapon, as they lead the Bundesliga. He is following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who last season helped Napoli win the Italian title again by finishing as Serie A's top scorer.
