Which teams will claim the two qualifying tickets for the 2024 Olympics? To date, only five African teams have taken part in the Olympic Women's Football Tournament since its debut in Atlanta in 1996. They are Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The teams involved will therefore have to fight hard for the two places available. Qualification for the 2024 Olympics will be decided in the fourth round, where the four winners of the third round will meet in two two-legged ties. There is still a long way to go for these sides, as the second round of qualifying starts this Wednesday, 25 October. And 12 teams are in contention. Exempt from the first round, Nigeria's Super Falcons travel to Ethiopia. Round of 16 finishers at the Women's World Cup, the Nigerians are hoping to finally return to the Olympics. They are the only African nation to have played in three Olympic tournaments.
South Africa are aiming for a third appearance. Like the Nigerians, the reigning African champions were exempt from the first round. Banyana Banyana, in good form, face DR Congo at the Stade des Martyrs this Wednesday.
Morocco, the new force in African women's football, runners-up in the African Cup of Nations and next hosts of the Women's AFCON, take on Namibia. Round of 16 finishers at the last Women's World Cup, the Atlas Lionesses aim to qualify for their first Olympics. Kick-off is this Thursday, 26 October at 16:00 GMT at the Independence Stadium, Windhoek.
Knocked out by Kenya in the race for the Women's AFCON, Cameroon head to East Africa again. The Indomitable Lionesses will take on Uganda. Amid a crisis, the Cameroonians will try to redeem themselves after their disappointment in the Women's AFCON qualifiers.
In the other ties, Ghana face Benin, while Tanzania take on Botswana. Zambia have automatically qualified for the third round because of Mali's withdrawal.
