Taekwondo: Cheick Sallah Cissé saves face for Ivory Coast
Cheick Sallah Cissé won Ivory Coast's first medal of the 2024 Olympics, taking bronze in the +80kg taekwondo category. Having been pulled back in through the repechage after losing his semi-final to Ireland's Caden Cunningham, Cissé bounced back, despite an injury, to win the bronze-medal match. The medal means Ivory Coast do not leave empty-handed after the disappointments in athletics.
4x400m: Botswana shine again
Botswana continue to make a splash at the 2024 Olympics. Two days after Letsile Tebogo's historic 200m gold, the men's 4x400m relay team claimed a superb silver medal, finishing just behind the untouchable Americans. The result tops off an extraordinary week for Botswana, who are increasingly establishing themselves as a rising force in world athletics.
1500m: Faith Kipyegon is the queen of the distance
Kenya's Faith Kipyegon made history once again by winning 1500m gold, with a new Olympic record to boot. Kipyegon thus becomes the first athlete to win gold at three consecutive Olympic Games in this event (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2021, Paris 2024), cementing her status as the queen of the distance.
800m: Emmanuel Wanyonyi takes gold, Djamel Sedjati bronze
Kenya continued their medal haul thanks to Emmanuel Wanyonyi, crowned Olympic champion over 800m. The event also went North Africa's way, with Algeria's Djamel Sedjati taking the bronze medal, confirming African dominance over this distance.
5000m: Ronald Kwemoi takes silver
Kenya added another medal to their tally thanks to Ronald Kwemoi, who took silver in the 5000m, finishing behind Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Kwemoi ran a remarkable race, bringing another medal to his country, who are now the top African nation at the 2024 Olympics.
Marathon: Tamirat Tola shines, Kipchoge pulls out
Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola won marathon gold in a blistering 2h06'26'', setting a new Olympic record. His compatriot Benson Kipruto also impressed, taking the bronze medal. However, the big surprise was the withdrawal of the legendary Eliud Kipchoge, who left the race at the 31st kilometre, leaving Ethiopia to dominate this iconic Olympic event.
Javelin: Jo-Ane Van Dyk takes silver
South Africa's Jo-Ane Van Dyk won the silver medal in the javelin final with an impressive throw of 63.93 metres. She was beaten by Japan's Haruka Kitagushi, but her performance adds another medal to South Africa's tally.
Weightlifting: Sara Ahmed takes silver for Egypt
In weightlifting, Egypt's Sara Ahmed won the silver medal in her category, lifting a total of 268 kilos. The medal is further proof of the growing strength of Egyptian athletes in the discipline.
