Nineteen teams took part in the 1st edition of the Samurai Cup, organised by the Ivorian Shotokan Karate Association. In the end, the competition came down to a two-horse race between Abidjan Sud and the San Pedro zone. The Abidjan side relied on the know-how of Attobran Samuel (5-time Ivorian champion in the -65kg category), Bah Modibo (6-time Ivorian champion at -73kg) and Kouamé Brandon to win the Kumité against the San Pedro team (14-08). They take home 100,000 CFA francs for the win. In the Kata, it was the San Pedro zone that shone. The teams from the Gbêkê region (Bouaké) and Abidjan Nord finished 2nd and 3rd respectively on the podium.
