Kenya made a successful start to the Nairobi leg of Challenge League A. On Wednesday 21 October at the Nairobi Gymkhana, the hosts beat Denmark by 103 runs after posting 324 for seven. Irfan Karim, who made 106 runs from 115 balls, was named player of the match.
The win was built in two stages: a solid innings around Karim, then a collective response with the ball. Denmark, who needed 325 to win, were bowled out for 221 after 44 overs and one ball. The final margin should not obscure the resistance they showed early on, though.
Karim anchors the innings
The dismissal of captain Dhiren Gondaria for a duck left Kenya with an early problem. Subham Patel, with 48 runs, then Rakep Patel, with 57, helped build the total around Karim. In cricket, scoring a hundred runs individually is called a “century”: Karim reached that mark without the Kenyan innings depending on him alone.
Sachin Gill added 49 runs, while Francis Mutua finished not out on 21. These contributions took Kenya well past 300, rather than leaving them reliant on the individual score of their top scorer. Denmark therefore had to sustain a long effort to get back into the game.
Ngoche removes both openers
The Danes held firm at first: Musa Shaheen and Hamid Shah took the score to 85 without loss. Shem Ngoche then dismissed Shaheen, who had made 35 runs, followed by Shah, who had scored 55. The score went from 85 without loss to 98 for two.
That collapse weighed on the chase. Denmark were five wickets down at 128. Ngoche finished with three wickets for 31 runs conceded in ten overs, while Vraj Patel and Gondaria took two wickets each. Despite Taranjit Bharaj's 35 runs, the visitors never found enough consistency to threaten the Kenyan total.
Kenya will face Qatar on 24 October at Ruaraka, before meeting Jersey the next day at the Nairobi Gymkhana. This first win gives their home week a solid starting point; it says nothing about how the leg will end.
