Souleymane Koné gave Burkina Faso a podium place from the very start of the Tour du Faso, on Friday 30 October in Kaya. Second on the opening stage, he was beaten in the sprint by Dutchman Tom Wijfje, who won in 3:29:10. South Africa's Gustav Basson finished third.
The host nation placed three riders in the top six: Paul Daumont finished fifth and Soumaïla Ilboudo sixth. Belgium's Timmy De Boes took fourth place.
Daumont already in the mix at Korsimoro
Before the finish, Daumont had made his mark at the third intermediate sprint, in Korsimoro. Wijfje won that mid-stage sprint, ahead of Daumont and Mali's Yaya Diallo.
Wijfje thus ended the day with the stage win and the first yellow jersey of leader of this 37th edition. Koné, second at the finish, was the first Burkinabè rider across the line in Kaya.
