He had said he could not travel to Mali within the time given, but that clearly was not enough. Summoned by Femafoot to explain himself within 48 hours over his recent social media posts, in which he sharply criticised the governing body's running of the game, Hamari Traoré has been suspended as a precautionary measure.

He is accused of "breach of honour and dignity, incitement and rebellion against the national team and Malian football", according to a Femafoot member contacted by AFP. Captain of the Mali national team, Hamari Traoré is seen as the man behind the players' revolt. During the international break in June, the Real Sociedad right-back and several of his team-mates had announced their intention "not to honour the national team and not to take part in the upcoming qualifying matches." The decision was taken to draw attention to what they consider to be "mismanagement" by the Malian Football Federation.

This suspension is the first measure taken against Hamari Traoré by Femafoot, with further sanctions potentially to come for the Eagles captain. His case is now in the hands of the disciplinary committee, which could take a harsher line.
