Chad Laycock took five wickets in a single over, but the Tuskers still lost. On Tuesday 13 October in Pietermaritzburg, Laycock, of the Tuskers (KwaZulu-Natal Inland), finished with figures of six for 26 against the Titans. The visitors nonetheless won the YesPlay Pro20 Cup fixture by 21 runs.
The match was played in the T20 format: each side faces a maximum of twenty overs, each made up of six valid deliveries. A wicket here means the dismissal of a batter; runs are the points scored. Laycock's figures therefore tell two stories: he dismissed six opponents while conceding just 26 runs.
Pretorius sets the Titans on their way
The Titans built their innings around a strong start. Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Sinethemba Qeshile shared a stand of 112 runs before the first wicket fell. Pretorius scored 81 from 36 balls before Laycock ended his stay at the crease.
Qeshile contributed 46 and Dewald Brevis 33. Despite the wickets taken by Laycock, the Titans reached a total of 204. To win, the Tuskers needed 205 in reply.
Laycock also chips in during the chase
Michael Erlank led the Tuskers' reply with 56. Jack Lees added 34, while Laycock remained not out on 31: he had not been dismissed when his side's innings ended.
The Tuskers finished their twenty overs on 183 for six. They therefore fell short of the target, despite having wickets in hand. In T20, the twenty-over limit matters as much as dismissals: a side cannot extend its chase simply because it still has wickets left.
The Titans extended their unbeaten run in the competition to six matches.
