Young Africans have taken a strong step towards the group stage of the CAF Champions League. In the first leg of the second preliminary round, the Tanzanians earned a fine home win over Sudanese club Al Merreikh (2-0), giving them a comfortable lead ahead of the return leg on 30 September.
FC Nouhadibou also impressed in Mali. The Mauritanians thrashed Real Bamako on their own ground, with an emphatic scoreline (3-0), raising hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage.
However, AS FAR lost to Etoile Sahel by the narrowest margin (1-0). The reigning Moroccan champions will have work to do at home to reach the Champions League group stage. So will Simba SC, who had to settle for a draw against Zambia’s Power Dynamos FC (2-2).
The first legs of this 2nd preliminary round continue on Sunday, with TP Mazembe, Al-Ahly and Wydad FC among the teams beginning their campaigns.
